Dude, we can't even lock up real criminals these days. Burglars, armed robbers, home invaders are all turned out of our revolving door criminal justice system. And you want to lock up people for life over a couple beers?
Couple of beers and behind the wheel has cost how many lives over the years? There is a reason it is a crime..... anyone who drives drunk is trash..... period ....... and should go to jail after the 2nd offense
We should take all the small timers out of jails (marijuana offenses, petty theft as examples) that would free up a decent amount of space allowing us to house real criminals (serial drunk drivers who shun rehab qualify as this) who victimize and put others at extreme risk
We've recently had some horrific crashes here in the Seattle area involving repeat DUI offenders, so there is a push for new legislation.
A state rep named Roger Goodman (D Kirkland) has an interesting new approach. He proposes that anyone convicted of 3 or more DUIs be banned from buying alcohol for 10 years. Enforcement would be effected by creating a special, distinctive driver's license for people with 3 DUI's. This would also mean that clerks and bartenders would have to check ID for every customer, every time.
I heard Rep. Goodman interviewed last night. He said that the approach of taking away their driver's license or car keys doesn't work, because the offenders end up ignoring the law and driving anyway. He also said that a similar system is already in place in Alaska.
What is your opinion on this approach?
Just as expected, a politician blames the alcohol and not the perp. This will be as bad as guns.
1- why should a three-time DUI offender even be allowed a DL?
2- it's not like they won't have others buy it for them, right?
3- they can only do a $hit job of enforcing laws already on the books, so let's add more!!

I agree with you... the one caveat is that you can't be legally intoxicated after a couple of beers. Most drunk drivers aren't driving slightly drunk, they are blowing .15s or worse.
"He said that the approach of taking away their driver's license or car keys doesn't work, because the offenders end up ignoring the law and driving anyway."
Right. the offenders don't obey the laws that exist now. so we should pass another law. THAT always works, doesn't it!
I like the idea of confiscating the vehicle that is being driven while drunk or stoned, and selling it immediately upon conviction. No, it doesn't matter whose vehicle it is, it gets sold. If you were dumb enough to loan your vehicle to a drunk, and you want it back, feel free to go bid at the auction.
Oh, and the cops keep the money from the auction, so if you owe on the vehicle, you will have to make repayment arrangements with your bank or credit union.
At the same time, allow insurance companies to blacklist the drunk, so he or she can never again get even basic liability insurance.
No license, no insurance, no vehicle, no one to borrow a vehicle from, no drunk driver!
You can't watch your car keys 24/7. That's ridiculous. What are you going to do, lock them in a safe or wear em around your neck like dog tags? Won't your door remote short out in the shower?
"We will not do what is necessary to keep repeat offenders off the streets so we propose to make things more complicated for those who abide by our laws".
I should note based upon the statement above.....nobody has ever been nor is anyone suggesting that people get put in prison for life for having a couple beers.

Inslee, himself has some pretty saviour fines that I heard on the news. They may be a little more realistic.

That is true. We have had such restrictions in Alaska for several years. The court can prohibit anyone from purchasing alcohol for a specified period (set by the court). A new driver's license is issued with a big red letter "J" on it, and it costs you an additional $50. We also have an ignition interlock device that must be installed, even after just one DUI conviction.
Everyone purchasing alcohol in Alaska is carded, regardless of age.
Personally, I like the idea. It may be a hassle to show ID when you are well over 50 years old, like me, but if it prevents just one drunk from getting on the road and killing someone it is worth the hassle. Those who cannot handle drinking alcohol responsibly should not be allowed to drink alcohol.

I'd agree with you on pot, but we should let DWIs out and lock up real criminals. We would rather bust someone for a couple drinks because they are a source of revenue. Our system seems to favor releasing real criminals, such as burglars, car thiefs, those that steal firearms, let alone domestic abusers or those guilty of assault. If we locked up every car thief or burglar for 10 years, you'd see our crime rate plummet.
If we're going to lock up DWIs for the risk they pose, we should do the same with anyone that texts while driving or has more than 2 screaming, distracting kids in a vehicle.
