So I have two questions:
1) Why have attitudes changed so vastly in the last 20 to 30 years?
And
2) When you take away everything America stands for in the name of "safety'" then what are we really trying to protect ourselves against? Because we have robbed ourselves of everything we have ever stood for.

Some radio guy (I forget who) has had callers, faced with economic issues (uncertainty, decline, downward mobility) express the idea that while they personally work, contribute economically, and pay taxes, they are worried about their ability to continue to do so (e.g. their job etc may be in danger) and while they don't currently take government assistance, they are okay with the big safety net because they are worried they might someday need it.
He refers to these as "Kevin and Ken voters" or something like that, presumably named after two of his callers.
