Have been reading that the royal family is actually of German descent so maybe that would explain it to some degree. it also might explain Prince Harry's choice of costumes...

Yes, they adopted the English name "Windsor" at the time of WWI, when sentiments were very anti-German. King George V's first cousin was Kaiser Wilhelm.

What needs to be understood is that Europe's royal family largely transcended/transcends national ethnicity. The royal families of each nation were not solely descended from people of that area, instead they all intermarried with each other and were one large family whose members competed with each other for control of the continent. The Windsor's may not be pure ethnic Englishmen because they are descended from some German aristocrats, but those same German aristocrats were already not pure ethnic Germans either because they too were the product of centuries of marriage with other royal families, meaning that while they spoke German it's known that they also had ancestors who were French, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, Spanish, English, Italian, Swedish, Czech etc. All European royals everywhere are a big mix of different European blood lines.

Yes .. Queen Elizabeth's mother was from the Scottish aristocracy. Her husband was from the Greek Royal family. Princess Diana was from the English aristocracy and Kate Middleton's ancestors were coal miners (amongst others). So any German ancestry is considerably diluted.

But he was a supporter of the local nazi party and his wife to be had an even closer connection. Socially they brought along German visitors from he consulate, and made no attempt to hide the admiration. It was perhaps fortunate that he met a divorcee and thus they had a 'normal' reason for removing him from the position. It would have been a great discrace if his ideology was widely known at the time. Those in the know understood war was going to happen no matter how much teasing there was before and did not want someone with his leanings in a position of influence.

This entire "Royal Family" nonsense just strikes me as so bizarre in this day and age. Just as ridiculous as Hollywood star worship...maybe even more so. Does the royal afterbirth hold magical powers? What a crock!
So? If they like it, what's wrong with it? It brings (I heard) tremendous amounts of tourist $$$ to their country. Think of it as Disneyworld.

It is not against British law for a monarch to marry an American.
Against the law no, but it will not happen besides the UK we also have the royal realms putting their oar in ,and they would not be happy about a revolting colonial sharing the throne.
Besides it can not happen for this reason, Americans never bow to Monarchy and we would end up with a yank calling the Monarch Queenie or Kingi while chewing gum.

True- Look at Russia's Catherine The Great- a German ruling over Russia---Look at King George and the emperor of Russia - they looked like twins because they were relatives. Royal families were like mafia- they married and bred to ensure power. Their empire through arranged marriages spread from one side of the planet to the other. It is actually pretty smart and tribal...You make friends with the other tribe by offering up your daughter or son for breeding and marriage---Then your potential enemy becomes your relative.
