Eh...I think he is being used to diversify the GOP in Virginia since VA demographics have changed over the years.
He is not all that different from other black GOPers. I have never called myself an African-American since I have no recent connection with Africa.
My whole family doesn't call ourselves that, but we don't care what others call themselves either. But if that will get people to want to vote for someone, I'll let my cousin know who has an MPA and is looking to get into politics (she is a Dem though). She can use our Americanism to her advantage because, you know, Americans who are black who call themselves African-American are not seen as Americans in the eyes of voters.
