There is no cognitive dissonance because they don't accept the fetus as being a human being.

Where the cognitive dissonance comes in, in my opinion, is how abortion isn't murder because the fetus isn't a human being. But killing a pregnant woman is considered two murders. Now that is completely indefensible as far as I can see, and I have never seen anyone able to answer it.

One involves a woman's right to choose what does and doesn't grow inside her own body and the other is the taking two lives against the will of the woman.

No one can force a woman to have a baby and no one can force a woman to not have a baby.

Perhaps it has something to do with birth being the dividing line between being integrated into the mother's body and being a separate life-form.

I myself would alter the law so that it is considered one murder rather than two, but there's much bigger fish to fry. Also, interestingly, the fetal homicide laws vary by state. On the question of killing a fetus against the will of the mother, as of 2007 that is classified as homicide or murder in 21 states; of the remaining 29, 11 states classify it as murder if the fetus is past a certain age, and 12 states classify it as an assault on the woman (including Kansas, of all places).
