The Port of Seattle will probably increase price caps in light of this.

I'm sure business owners will be looking for work space outside of SeaTac.

Why are these tyrants dictating what a business owner can charge? Let the market AKA customers decide what the prices are.

Probably being a key word in your sentence. Still no guarantee but hey, these people voted themselves a great pay raise! I do wonder sometimes at people's lack of foresight.

Interesting...

Quote:
The SeaTac initiative will raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour for hospitality and transportation workers in and near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
Washington city votes to raise minimum wage to $15 - Nov. 6, 2013

Apparently liberals are picky about WHO works for higher minimum wage... I also like the "in and near" part as well.... apparently only minimum wage for people associated with the airport, not the entire city...

Got to love liberals...

Note to self: Eat before you fly into Sea-Tac... don't want to pay 20.00 for a crappy airport sandwich anyway.

Funny how this is such a big issue when it's probably no big deal for the post part.

In the Permian Basin area of Texas, they've had to SUBSTANTIALLY raise wages for unskilled workers because the oilfields increased the demand for labor. All the fast food joints, truck stops and other service related businesses have pretty much all raised wages significantly. They're even giving big fat bonuses to unskilled workers just to attract them.

Guess what happened?

.....nothing.

Turns out that they could all bear the increase in costs...at least from what I can see because everything is still open and doing brisk business.

Not saying that's the template for Seattle, but I would at least wait for the fallout before passing judgement.

But who decided to raise those wages? The people running the businesses that knew they could bear the cost or were they forced to do so by people that voted themselves a pay increase?

so you are going to pay an UNSKILLED worker $15....what are you going to pay your SKILLED workers

raising the min wage only costs jobs

its logic

and yes raising the min wage in 07/09 was PART of the collapse, as well as the clinton mortgage bubble, and the offshoring of JOBS by the globalist liberals

here is an example of what happened with this last 'raising'

minimum wage is for UNSKILLED

I pay my UNSKILLED laborers (that clean the shop) over $7 an hour, the min wage is $5

an example:

I run a maintenance shop
I have a shop foreman...$23/hr
I have 3 mechanics.......$20/hr
I have a parts manager...$21/hr
I have 2 mechanic helpers...$12
I have 2 parts workers/drivers...$10
I have 2 labors (to clear the shop)....$7 (2 over min)

minimum wage is $5

the 'government' raises the mimunum wage to 7.5

now I HAVE to increase the laborers wage to AT LEAST 7.5.. and he will WANT $9 (2 over min)....but If I give the "unskilled" laborer $9 then the driver (must maintain a clean liciense) will want more (hey boss, I was making $3 more than the unskilled guy) ...as so on, and so on...

thus RAISING THE COSTS of my SERVICE that I provide to the society.....

so either costs will go up....or people will get laid-off......

I am not so sure about that. SeaTac also has a bunch of hotels and restaurants. I think the people who benefit will be largely workers who are skilled/productive enough to merit $15/hr, but for whatever reason are currently underpaid.

Again the big problem I have with this is that it cuts out the bottom rungs of the ladder. What if you're not experienced and productive enough to merit that much? Now it is illegal for the employer to offer you a $10/hr job so that you can start working your way up the ladder. A lot of guys who get out of prison go get restaurant jobs. What restaurant is going to hire a guy just out of prison, when for $15 hr they can get an unemployed college grad with an art history degree?
