Almost always zoning is used by property owners (not renters, owners) to protect their own property values.

Of course, property owners may well be a "politically powerful minority."

But I don't think that's what you meant.

To what points of ridiculous foolishness do government entities go? Read this to get your dander up @ Prison Planet.com » Florida Couple Forced to Dig Up 17-Year Old Organic Garden
If you had an apple tree, current bushes or a walnut tree those would probably be just fine, so apparently it's all about aesthetics. Oh wait a tic... Florida... so an orange tree instead of an apple tree.

I am only allowed to water on certain days (except the veggie garden). It's city ordinance, not big government stepping in. Down the road, the local community does not allow colorful Christmas lights, blow-ups, or "white-light LED" displays. So what? Rules are everywhere and sometimes our own interests run counter to the rules. That's life.
Well, that is, of course, still a "government entity," but the removal of government at this lowest level means going to anarchy.

It's been my experience that suburbs tend to have stricter zoning laws and ordinances than occurs in the city. For example, Chicago allows people to keep chickens and use their front yards to grow food.

Many, many Chicago suburbs do not allow chicken keeping or front yard vegetable gardens because the majority of people prefer it that way. Heck, NYC allows hen keeping. Move to any number of Long Island suburbs, ( that trend Conservative) and it's illegal.

It is a local ordinance that governs that - and the residents or constituents can be of any political stripe, so your broad-brushing makes no sense.

You're likely to see this restrictive local ordinances or codes in more upscale, wealthier communities, which aren't necessarily liberal, politically. Look up San Marino, CA. Very wealthy, traditionally conservative, and has a set of rather stringent codes for residential property.

Miami Shores is a upscale wealthy suburb of Miami and they do have strict zoning laws. You basically are in a heavy populated area and these places can even dictate what color you can paint the exterior of your house as well.

And oh for goodness sake, don't buy a historical house in a historical neighborhood.

No way that's Florida. I believe the hill with the most prominence in Florida is just 65 feet.
