How did you turn this into a partisan issue? What is it with the extreme left (and right) pulling partisanship out of nowhere?

Obviously I agree with you that the person you are responding to needs to read a biology textbook, but claiming cons have a 'disdain for facts' makes you look pretty ignorant yourself.

Because it's something I've noticed over & over again so yes, I had to mention it.

Also, for the record, I am not advocating giving legal personhood to all non-human animals.

Cripes, isn't it hard enough to tell the difference between some legal personhoods who look human but act like animals
let alone trying to determine which non human personhood persons are legal
and that doesn't even count all the human personhood illegal immigrants the USA can't seem to manage to get out of the country
because of all the personhood human do gooders who can't mind their own business
and accept the fact that
illegal is illegal whether you are a legal human or non human personhood or not.

Figure that one out.

A disregard for facts is something I have noticed by anyone who proudly calls themselves a democrat or republican in today's political climate. A good example are people who will post an article from salon.com but turn around to bash fox news (and vice versa).

As soon as someone claims to follow either party, that is a giant warning sign that they don't think hard enough.

No it isn't. It is idiocy. Animals are not persons and only some lame brained PITA activist would even suggest the insane idea.

To be a person, and to have rights, two things are necessary.

One, that you possess self-awareness and understand the concept of being a sovereign being and why you have rights.

Two, that you are able to communicate those rights and to act on your own behalf to secure those rights.

Animals have neither and therefore have only one right, the right to be consumed by other animals and higher species.

Oh they also have the right to be quite tasty...

Considering how any time spent on animal rights is time taken away from helping suffering people, I am not sure why anyone would want to put effort into this issue right now. Is animal cruelty a problem? Absolutely. Is it a bigger problem than helping starving and impoverished people? Absolutely not.

Why can't we just do both?

The astounding arrogance and condescension I see in this thread is really sad. Humans aren't animals? Give me a break! I guess our uncanny resemblance to other primates, not just physically, but neurologically and even genetically (remember we share almost all of our DNA in common with chimpanzees and bonobos) is just a coincidence? No animal can ever be intelligent enough or aware enough to be worthy of personhood? I think some people need to go read some studies on animal intelligence studies. Some of them are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.

I personally never said humans aren't animals. That is pretty ridiculous.

We can do both, but we shouldn't. We only have a finite amount of time to spend. Every hour we spend helping animals is an hour we DON'T spend helping humans. That means every hour chosen to help animals is an hour chosen to harm humans, by extension. I am not comfortable making that call.

I am not saying that is a happy, warm fuzzy answer, but it is realistic. If you could spend an hour to save a dozen parrot's lives, or the life of one starving child, which would you chose? It sucks to make that choice, but that is the choice we are talking about.

So mentally disabled people, babies and demented elderly don't have rights? That's pretty sick buddy.

Yes, I am being sarcastic to point out the incredible flaws in your logic.
