We most certainly do... I even have a display currently up at the library for it, featuring books by Irish writers and/or set in Ireland.
And props to the poster who pointed out this hypocrisy, which is one I've mentioned before when people whine about Black History Month. We also have a national month celebrating women's history, Hispanic-Americans, Pan/Asian-Americans, Italian-Americans, Native Americans, GLBTQ pride, and a few others I am blanking on right now. Funny how you never hear whining over the ones involving white/Anglo cultures, huh?
Is it possible that the "whining" stems from the vast difference in how those various "History Months" are observed? Tell me which of them has the school curricula of the entire country based upon it, and which is so barely observed that many people aren't aware it exists.
There are many different groups, all carrying banners. Schools carry banners, firefighters carry banners, Irish-American Realtor group carries banners, why not the Irish-American LGBT association? That is the problem, all of the other groups are allowed to carry their banners, but not the LGBT group.
Because the PRIVATE group that runs the parade doesn't want such groups to be affiliated with them. Whether you agree with that position or not, they are in fact a PRIVATE group, and as such have the right to decide with what other groups they will be affiliated. And the rights we have also allow any of us who want to, to publicly condemn them for that. To call them intolerant, and bigoted, any whatever else you might want to call them for their decisions. What we DON'T have the right to do is FORCE them to allow groups to march in their parade.
Just like this forum has rules about stais not political. ing on topic.
The St. Patrick's Parade is NOT a protest parade.
They are free to sponsor their OWN parade if they wish tell everyone their sex life.
It'd kinda like the Macy's Parade, the "official start of the Christmas season, to have a bunch of Valentine's Day floats.
Gay pride isnt protesting anything. And its not political. bring gay Is not political. Lots of other Irish groups in this parade like womens groups and various special interest groups ( being gay is not a spevial interest group) celebrating pride and its not considered political. Again the anti gay political anti gay catholic church is the reason why just gays were excluded.
