Yeah. It's a college town. Rents are cheap since students are the main source of revenue for them.
He's making above min wage though but not by much..$9 or $10/hour.

Rent is the killer. You live in a high COL area and rent can break the budget.
My son rents a one bedroom for $600. The complex has pool, sauna, workout room. Cable and internet are included.
And he just renewed for another year with no increase. It's a decent complex right on the free bus line for students which makes his transportation costs $0.

My son is working for a little above min wage while going to college.
He pays his rent, utilities, food, cellphone and still has pocket money left over.

No car though. Where he lives the COL is 61 (college town).
I paid for a family, he is paying for one person on minimum wage today. See the difference?

Also a college town for me as well

But you also posted that you had friends that are struggling to make their rent payments.
Are they also raising families ?

Location and COL have a huge effect on how far your money goes especially if you don't make high wages.

Actually no, they are a couple, no kids. Thats the point. 2 people working, 1 full time, 1 part time, are having a harder time then I did working on minimum wage in 1988 with a wife and a kid that were not working.

Location and COL have a part to play as well.
If you don't earn a lot of money than high COL areas are going to kill you financially.

Often, but I think this year its going to get pushed hard. The topic of wealth inequality and minimum wage seems to be getting more press then in prior years.

I doubt a minimum wage increase will pass, but I do suspect its going to be a major issue.

But if it were to pass it would be like the past raises..a small amount over several years.
The last raise was in 2009 which was the last of three parts of the last bill that passed.

So calling for $10.10 in 2017 is moot because the cost of everything will have gone up by then.

Shrug they're calling for 10.10 now, in 2017 expect it to be $12.

Really they should pass one and just peg it to inflation so we stop having this debate. Something Oregon does-Currently $9.10

No they aren't. It's the same 3 phase approach..$8.20, $9.10 and then $10.10
