Yes, it is the point. The question was "Can anyone explain why the federal government owns this land in the first place? ". The answer is that no one has bought it yet.

I know you want to socialize it, and I respect your opinion, I just don't agree with it.

Good point.

This should serve as a reminder to blacks, Latinos and leftists to arm up the next time they want to protest.

Wasteland? The western 13 states that the federal government has targeted are the richest lands. They're basically confiscating resources, by locking up millions of acres. If you look on a topo map of government owned lands, you'll notice everything east of New Mexico is blank, except for very small pockets. That's because the resources are poor in the eastern states.

They will not sell that land to individuals. Countries like China... yes, just like they did in Idaho.

So how do the feds "own" it in the first place? And what rights to they claim on that land that is in different states all over the country and why should we have to buy it as it was never owned to begin with. Property was the first thing the Russians took away. I guess you are fine with that. I'm not. Are you going to go back to the Lousiana Purchase? Doesn't matter if you do. We own the government............or so we should so that land in in essence ours. What the debate about is taxes and bullying by big bro. Mostly about taxes which is all they care about. Sad they tax land they stole. Good gig if you can get er.

Very true.........big bro is eating up the west. There is a reason for that.

This land was good enough to run cattle. Those cattle were fat and in great shape.

Wait till they start going after their farts. Media will love that when ranchers are run off and cows slaughtered for farting too much. Gotta save the world. Liberals of course will baaaa along and not care about sheep farts. Well until we all start eating sheep of course. Just amazing how dumb folks are anymore.

What are you talking about? The land of the Mojave and Sonora desert have extremely low utility. With water you might do something with them...but there is no water. It is rather simple to stake a mining claim in the great basin area. But again it is hard to mine without water and their is no water.

A perfectly reasonable place to place solar panels. That is because the alternate uses are so poor.

BLM sells significant land to individuals and corporations all the time. There are areas where wilderness is to be maintained but virtually anything within the development area of Las vegas is for sale. Actually BLM offers the land and nobody bids.

That is likely why Bundy was using three times as much land as he ever had permits for grazing. If you get the density low enough it is easy to get fat cattle...and it is quite cheap if you don't have to pay for the use of the land.

Courts are lazy and generally lack common sense.

Not exactly a welfare queen but part of our government run agriculture system.
The Taylor Grazing Act was a "gee thanks" kind of bill. It was meant to protect
grazing lands, but animals will eat where they want out west. Unless you want
to have them all crated like they do in Amarillo.

A very good read by F.R. Carpenter, the first chief of the grazing act - speech from 1962
says it all:

"The Act was a tremendous turn in policy whereby the Federal Government said, "No longer will we try to dispose of this land. Nobody wants it because it's too dry and too worthless to pay taxes on. We're going to do three things with it: (1) we'll sell the isolated tracts; (2) we'll lease the little pieces that won't fall naturally into a grazing district; and (3) then we'll form grazing districts." This act was a tremendous surprise and was very antagonistically received in the West."

" We would go out there and the stockmen would ask, "What kind of fee? We've always grazed for nothing. My father came to this country in a covered wagon and he fought his way out and settled a little ranch here and improved it." He's used all the public land that lies adjacent to his place. That's as good as owning it and now you're coming out here and telling us we've got to pay 8 cents a head a month for a fee. How come?"

"All our grazing districts are all gone to pot and the federals have taken over and we don't have anything to say." I say, "That's your fault. You were given a ballot. Did you vote for the last director?" "No, I was too busy." I tell them, "You don't deserve any freedom if you don't go to the polls and vote for it."

"They talk about our creeping socialism and all these things that are being taken away from us. They are being taken away from us for two reasons: 1. Because we want somebody to do everything for us and 2. Because we are not willing to make a fight for democracy. This puts the bee on the stockmen in the handling of his ranges."

"He can have any kind of administration he wants if he takes an interest in it."

I think Mr. Bundy is interested.
