What have we protected them from? Polar bear attacks?
Yeah, but as far as taxes go, we get a LOT of bang for our buck. Everything from health care to day care to tuition.
For 90% of the population sure, but the other 10% not so much. I've seriously thought about moving to Toronto, but can't justify paying more in taxes. If I ever decide to have kids Canada might be a worthwhile pursuit simply due to the education system and child support laws.

Canada is better for 90% of the population, but 10% of of the population would be worse off - tax wise anyway. However, the real number may be even smaller due the differences between the two countries.
For example, in the USA public schools aren't very good, but private school is going to run you $20-$30K/yr (per kid).
Incomes are higher in Canada.
Housing prices are higher in Canada.
Child support is lower in Canada.
You lose your house in Canada.
The USA has a larger market for business owners.
Canada has a better tax system for small business owners.
Etc, etc, etc.
