Wow - who'd have guessed that an ethic group that has less money on average tips less... big shock... And even if you account for income disparities - which I seriously doubt happened - you still can't account for differences in income when the people in question were raised. Long story short, if you grew up having no money, you're likely to keep living that way, even if you eventually have money.

I'd like to know what the point of this thread is, too. It certainly seems questionable in it's intent...

LOL they controlled for income as well and the disparities still emerged. You can always tell those who comment before actually reading or even skimming the links.

The available research indicates the following:

Tips from Blacks are, on average, lower than those from Whites;
Black-White differences in restaurant tipping are not caused solely by race differences in socio-economic status;
Black-White differences in restaurant tipping are evident among the middle-class as well as the lower-class;

Black-White differences in restaurant tipping do not disappear when both groups get comparable service;
Blacks tip less than Whites even when the server is Black;
Blacks are much less familiar with the 15- to 20-percent restaurant tipping norm than are Whites;
Blacks tip less than do Whites in many (but not all) other service contexts; and
Asian-White and Hispanic-White differences in tipping are smaller, less robust, and have drawn less attention than Black-White differences in tipping.
What say you now?

I think he is getting at if the server doesn't receive the equivalent of the minimum wage in tips the restaurant has to pay the difference to get the server to the minimum.

I love when people like you post stuff like this and display your ignorance of the law. My concern is that many foreigners (I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here) never learn our nation's laws.... and then proceed to break them.

In the US, and each and every state within the US, the servers must take home minimum wage according to federal and state laws.

All you have to do is learn the laws where you reside. It's not that hard. Better yet, improve your reading comprehension... since the link to wikipedia you posted says exactly what I said.

"employers may pay tipped labor a minimum of $2.13 per hour, as long as the hourly wage plus tip income equals at least the minimum wage."

What say you now?
I say what I said before - if you grew up poor, you're likely to continue to "think poor" and minimize tips, etc. And minorities are more likely to have grown up poor, so there you go.

And, again, I'd like to know why this study is SOOOO important that it needs to be discussed at all...

Perhaps Whites earn more than Blacks thus can afford to tip more?

You should eat at home.

Or, fast food.

I am in Michigan....that wage is awful.....that is why we always tip well.....if the service is not real great we feel a good tip will be an encouragement.
