right, and if the redskins were a better team and had say won the super bowl, then the five indians that objected to the name would be praising them instead.

Actually the US Patent has always had this power, it is nothing new. They also prevent people from trying to patent common words and such. Though if they are doing this with the Redskins, they should be doing with teams like the Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City Chiefs as well. Though one could probably argue that the word Indian and Chief isn't racist, which they are not racist words.
A very wise man came up with this idea: instead of changing the name, change the logo to a "Redskin potato" ! That way, nobody could object and it would drive the PC people crazy ! They could still be the Washington Redskins but meaning something different.
