The problem is that the cost of alternatives will never be substantially less. That's why you see all the regs coming out about carbon etc. etc. The goal is to drive up the cost of coal so that
alternatives appear to cost less. They will never stand on their own financial two legs and will absolutely never be able to provide instantaneous load response to meet grid demand...
