"The poor get HC through medicaid. Stop the hysterics."
??? Before Obamacare, most poor adults did not get HC through Medicaid because they were not eligible. Under Obamacare, in most states these same uninsured adults STILL do not get HC through Medicaid. Where do people get the idea that they do?
Isn't Obamacare supposed to fix our health care problems? Why not just put everyone on it and do away with Medicaid? Isn't purchase of insurance mandatory, with penalties for those that don't comply? And with rebates for the "poor"?
I think toyman brings up a good example of what you're talking about. Instead of understanding the Obamacare law, he talks about Medicaid as a replacement for obamacare even though Obamacare changed Medicare in most states in the country.
My only advice to you freemkt is to dig up specifics on what you're talking about and show people. Unfortunately, many people make up their mind based on emotions because they don't know much, so when you shoot down their ideas, they get emotional since that's where the ideas originate.

uhm the poor DO qualify for Medicaid
a single person making 16,105 or less qualifies...without children
btw a min wage person making 7.30/hr with 40/week 52weeks/year only makes 15184
"There is currently no federal requirement that states provide health coverage to adults without dependent children. These adults qualify for Medicaid coverage only if they have a disability or are age 65 or older. However, about half of states provide some coverage through federal waivers or state-funded programs for non-disabled adults who have limited incomes but do not otherwise qualify for Medicaid."

There's a long-standing narrative on the hard right--spread by talk radio, the internet, etc.--that poor people have it made. They all supposedly get free HC (Medicaid), free meals (SNAP), free housing (section 8), etc. The poor (who are usually envisioned as being urban blacks) supposedly get all this free stuff and live lavish lifestyles all at the expense of hard-working, middle-class white Americans. Of course, it is utter rubbish, and easy to disprove. But facts and logic have nothing to do with how most people form their ideas. Most people just believe whatever appeals to their emotions. And appealing to frustrated, resentful, downwardly mobile white Americans by demonizing the poor is a long-standing tradition...

So you say "appealing to frustrated, resentful, downwardly mobile white Americans by demonizing the poor is a long-standing tradition" right after saying "facts and logic have nothing to do with how most people form their ideas"

boom....thread dead
??? Currently there are 20 states in which your claim is false and in which single persons below $16,105 "are likely to remain uninsured" according to Families USA.

How then does the hard right explain homelessness? Do they think homeless people reject Section 8 offered to them on a silver platter?
