To me, it isn't necessarily the idea of charity. We aren't necessarily playing Queen for a Day here. The question in my mind is whether we as a nation want to settle for a society that makes such stories not just possible, but inevitable. Is this really the best we can do, or should we be aiming a little higher?

If think no matter what your going to have strong and weak people, fortunate and less fortunate. I don't think its possible to make everybody happy. But hey, other groups of people are whining until they get what they want so maybe someday if you don't want to work and let others take care of you it will happen. As far as some people commenting on this topic, not everybody that has things have kissed butt or had stuff handed to them. Some people just want more and go out and get it. Work hard and know what your worth. If you get a low paying job that doesn't appear to offer a better future then leave and get a different job. If some people achieve the American dream I don't think its necessary to judge them either. Its just as bad to judge the more fortunate as the less fortunate. The owner of the company I work for has donated millions of dollars to his community. Without people like him the situation would be far worse. EW

The thing is that drugbarons appear to do the the same for their neighborhood. I just can't tell if they do this to help their people or just to be popular (=help themselves).
I mean donating is fine and all, but if it does not solve the structural problem of poverty it won't solve anything.

There will always be the "haves" and "have nots" regardless of what liberals desire.

Hezbollah also funds extensive social services programs. Four hospitals, twelve clinics, twelve schools, and two agricultural centers that provide technical assistance and training to local farmers. There is also an environmental program. Health care services provided by Hezbollah are less expensive than in private hospitals and are free for members. Let's hear it for Hezbollah...

You now support terrorist organizations?

Is this typical of liberals - supporting terrorists?

There will always be a state to enforce the laws of society upon those who would claim to be sovereign citizens. It is called - REALITY

Try to follow the bouncing ball. Two bounces and you were completely off the track. I wonder what that's typical of...

I worked for a company that let you know when you got hired that you were expected to work 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week. That's right, no days off. The owners wanted to have a 365-day a week round the clock factory and the cheapest way to do it was to pay overtime and have just two shifts -- morning and night. That way, they saved on medical insurance since they needed to provide it for less people. They also saved on Workers Comp and a lot of other things so that's what people worked: 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week. (It actually only came out to 11 1/2 hours since they let you take an unpaid 1/2 hour lunch during the 12 hours.)

Needless to say, people making $5, $6, $7 and $8 an hour were not getting rich working 80 hour weeks -- even with the overtime. Many had families to support. A lot of them were legal immigrants but didn't speak good English and had no time to take ESL classes outside of work.

Trust me on this: When you work 12 hour shifts every day of the week (and add a two hour commute to and from work), you don't really have a lot of time to do a lot of things besides work. It's hard to squeeze in grocery shopping and laundry (particularly since no one had a washing machine at home) and auto maintenance and dental work and the DMV and your kids and whatever else.

Also, many of the people working there had been there for over 5 years. Aside from the horrific hours, the jobs were okay. Either that, or everyone was just too tired to complain about their jobs.

The downside for the company was that they had a lot of workers comp claims. What happened (more than once) was that tired people lost fingers in the equipment. One guy actually lost three different fingers in three different accidents.

It's not a question of Have and have nots. It's a question on how little the have nots have. Not everyone can abundance. But that doesn't mean we can't have a standard of what minimal means.
