U.S. Marijuana Legalization Weakens Mexican Cartels

Once again, us liberty minded folks prove that you can solve most problems with more freedom, not less:

Quote:
Last week, The Washington Post reported that Marijuana farmers in the Sinaloa region of Mexico have “stopped planting due to a massive drop in wholesale prices, from $100 per kilo down to only $25,” with one farmer saying, “It’s not worth it anymore. I wish the Americans would stop with this legalization.”

I favor legalization as much as the next guy for moral reasons, but cartels make their $ through meth, heroin, cocaine, prostitution, racketeering, smuggling, and kidnapping.

Marijuana isn't much of their income at all. Theres a reason people get busted with 500lbs of the stuff at the border; it's cheap enough they can risk moving it like that.

Anyone one with half a brain (yes even us so-called "stoners") and doesn't have their head buried in the sand already knew this. Even better... Don't you find it ironic that cannabis is the LARGEST cash crop in the US, (yes bigger than corn and soybeans) and yet it's illegal? I say it's time we "cash" in!

Good find Xander! Now... "Reefer Madness" crowd in 3...2....1....

So a small percentage of there market is lost due to legalization, and it causes a 75% drop in prices? I find that claim dubious.

the same way bootleggers disappeared after prohibition fell.”

They didn't disappear. They started dealing in drugs.

None of these are real legitimate arguments for legalization. The only legitimate arguments are the level of harm in no way justifies what we are spending to stop it and the level of harm in no way justifies us stopping people from doing this.

This is also a valid point. The drug war has harmed more innocent people here and Latin America than the drugs themselves.

Tracing the U.S. heroin surge back south of the border as Mexican cannabis output falls - The Washington Post

The surge of cheap heroin spreading in $4 hits across rural America can be traced back to the remote valleys of the northern Sierra Madre.

With the wholesale price of marijuana falling — driven in part by decriminalization in sections of the United States — Mexican drug farmers are turning away from cannabis and filling their fields with opium poppies.

Mexican heroin is flooding north as U.S. authorities trying to contain an epidemic of prescription painkiller abuse have tightened controls on synthetic opiates such as hydrocodone and OxyContin. As the pills become more costly and difficult to obtain, Mexican trafficking organizations have found new markets for heroin in places such as Winchester, Va., and Brattleboro, Vt., where, until recently, needle use for narcotics was rare or unknown.

Oops....

According to the FBI’s crime statistics from the last 20 years, half of the drug arrests in the United States have been Marijuana-related. The U.S. Department of Justice reported that a “large portion of the U.S. illegal drug market is controlled directly by Mexican cartels.

They moved to other prohibited substances. This is why adults should not be prohibited from ingesting substances of their choice.
