Sorry but that is classic seminar caller stuff. I don't even get why liberals so often seem to feel compelled to claim to be ex-conservatives. It's probably a topic better addressed in the psychology forum.
The answer to your question why liberals claim to be "ex-conservatives" is because many of them probably were Republican before the Republican Party moved so far right that the former fringe became mainstream. Do you really think Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, even Ronald Reagan would have a home in the Repub Party of today? They would be all be considered RINOS by Repub standards now. For all the BS about liberals, socialism, etc. that confused cons write on this forum, today's Democrats are for the most part conservative light. I hope that answers your question.

Personally it has started to get me leery of Republicans and conservatives. Growing up as a Republican in CA I hadn't come across much social conservative/ right wing christian dogma so I didn't know how insane the the rural hick areas of this country really are. This forum has really opened my eyes up to it.
it really has helped lowered my faith in humanity, inability of rational thought, and the failure of our education system to even put the slimmest foundations of critical thought into peoples minds.

yeah, i'm not impressed - and thus my mind hasn't really changed much

that I know of.

maybe someone made a good point once, some long time ago.

Or in the Marketing Forum, if there is one! The PoC forum would get half the attendees it gets now.

The Republican party has moved left over the years. The party nominated one after another moderate after Ronald Reagan. HW Bush, Bob Dole, W Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney were all from the 'big gov't conservative' wing of the party. Ronald Reagan said that 'government is not the solution to our problems; government is the problem.' W. Bush by contrast said that 'when somebody hurts, government has got to move.' In short, government is the solution.

That is a move to the left, hardly "so far right" as you portray.

BTW Ike was pretty far to the right, myths notwithstanding.

Well the P&C forum reminds me of those old western movies, where people walk into a saloon with the piano playing and everyone fighting, breaking tables, all while a few people attempt to casually drink their ale. It's the wild wild wild west here.

Or maybe it's like the junior high dodge ball games in which everyone has a ball and tries to beam the other person.

I wonder how much Tea Party support Ike would would get for his 91% marginal tax rate or his commitment to big government projects like the intestate highway system? My guess....not much.

I have learned from some of the more cogent right wing posters here, and I enjoy reading their posts. But any potential move on the political dial is overcome by the transparent dishonesty and close-mindedness of the majority of the right wing posters here. Things like, "Tornado Kills 10 in Oklahoma: Thanks Obama!" I find such threads to be so phony and idiotic, I am amazed anyone would post such tripe in a discussion forum. But I see about 10 a day. When I see the same stuff being parroted by the GOP house, I must conclude a lot of GOP voters are dumb enough to put such blowhards in office. Couple that with the relentless hostility toward everyone else, coupled with almost no desire to govern, and no, I do not want conservatives in power. I am not all that liberal, just a bit center left, but I would rather shave this a cheese grater than to see such hateful fools running the country.

I would like to hear new ideas that work, from both sides. But what I have learned is that the current GOP platform is more about spinning the facts than providing competent leadership. Glad to be proven wrong anytime. I just have not been seeing it or hearing anything from the right that strikes me as real leadership. I keep hearing 40 year old ideas that never worked, half truths, character attacks, and lies. Sorry, that ain't inspiring.

We need to put a lot of moderates of both parties back in power, instead of partisan crazies, who cannot show anyone else any respect.

Not at all but I do respect different opinions. But that doesn't apply to the extremists on both sides. They are a little nutty lol

The 91% tax rate was a legal fiction, as liberal UC Berkley economist and lib darling T. Piketty has pointed out.
Lawrence Mone: There's No Going Back to the 1950s Tax System - WSJ

I like to think that most Republicans would still support the construction of the Interstate Highway System. We like things like roads, bridges, parks, and lighthouses within reason. Ike conceived the interstate system as a boon to national defense, which we Republicans invariably support.
