Cuba has issues. So do a bunch of other countries that don't have travel bans. Sanctions usually destroy the economy for the regular folk but don't reach the elite rulers. I understand banning import of weapons but we blockade food and medical supplies into "terrorist" nations. Does killing sick people make us safer? Nope, and it makes moderate people in those countries hate us.

How can the president make such a decision without any discussion from Congress? The Cuban embargo was passed by Congress, and only Congress has the right to repeal its laws.

He didn't repeal the embargo for the millionth time.

He's allowed by executive fiat to normalize relations with any nation of his choosing. The congress doesn't have purview over foreign policy.

Yes it should help to keep the Cuban gays out of the prisons.

Not nearly as much as we send to Egypt, Israel, Iraq or Afghanistan.

So, now we can go to Havana and buy up prime real estate....then when their rightful owners from the 50s come knocking for their property...we're in a lawsuit!

The Elian Gonzalez situation during the end of the Clinton administration lead to Bush getting something like 60% of the Cuban American vote and when he wasn't tough on Castro he got only like 40-50% in the 2004 re-election.

In short, Elian Gonzalez alone cost Gore at least 50,000 votes in Florida....no recount, no hanging chads....Gore would have won.

THAT is why it has taken so long. If FL wasn't a swing state and was instead deeply repub or dem....it would have happened a while ago.

P.S. Obama has no love for the Clintons (or vice versa) so he doesn't give a crap if this hurts Hillary. Just like some of her gun control speechs leading up to the midterms may have been intentional shots at him with regards to lame ducking him.
We've discussed this before...

I think the Democrats have held onto the 2000 elections too long. A charismatic Democrat can win Florida without the Cuban American vote. I think the demo in Florida has changed significantly since then, and so have the politics.

In fact, I think anyone managing to lift the embargo will GAIN Miami votes...not lose them.

I doubt (and hope) that foreigners will be barred from owning land.

The Cubans should immediately take that off the table.

Investments and partnerships (that should be thoroughly investigated) would be best.

I can't wait to hear Ted Cruz's take on this since he is of Cuban decent, some of the right wing have already come out against normalizing relations. This is a good first step, can't wait for Cuban Cigars.
