It's a bit of a conundrum; you have to oppose religious freedom in order to support it. Nonetheless, the ultimate goal of Islam is to quash liberty, and that is why we must quash Islam.

Whether some Muslims' beliefs are at odds with the principle of freedom of religion is irrelevant. It's like freedom of speech. You have to tolerate things you don't like sometimes, because the principle of freedom is more important than the actual religious practices.
You cannot oppose religious freedom in order to support it. You either support it, or you don't. Once you selectively start opposing some religious freedom, you've opened the door to opposing all religious freedom.
The ultimate goal of Islam is not to quash liberty. While there are many things about Islam that I don't like, the ultimate goal is for believers to get to the heaven of the God of Abraham. For people to live Godly lives. And the fact that Christians do live in the Middle East, have lived in peace alongside other religions, have done so since before the Crusades, says that Islam isn't nearly as intolerant as you believe it to be. It may not be easy for Christians to be the minority in that part of the world, or anywhere, actually, but that cannot be used as justification for making the lives of Muslims intolerable in the United States.
Either we value freedom above all other things, or we don't.
And the people who talk about putting an end to the world's second-largest religion obviously don't value freedom, nor are they in touch with reality.

No one said it better than thomas jefferson did, and in his day, he was on the left, to the extent that you can confidently assign any of the founders to today's definitions.
In fact, all the founders agreed on this principle, as did all the states that ratified the constitution. (Not denying there was plenty of argument about it at the time.)
what's really funny sad is Liberals do not understand that Radical Islamism would just assume to purge them like any one who does not share their beliefs.
Because freedom of religion is a principle too difficult for the right to handle?
The question of this thread was why does the left sympathize with Islam.
The answer being, the left doesn't sympathize with Islam. The left sympathizes with any group whose freedom of religion is being threatened.
Our constitution guarantees freedom of religion. Many posters seem to think defending the non radical, law abiding muslim's constitutional right to practice their religion is wrong.
Apparently, many on the right do not support the constitution. Should we start rounding up all muslims, put them in camps, send muslim citizens out of the country, put them in jail, or should we just kill them all? Seriously, what do those who do not believe that muslims have the same constitutional right to freedom of religion that they do propose to do with all the muslims?

Actually, this liberal knows full well that she'd be high on any jihadi's list.
Screw 'em.
But this liberal has also known some fine muslims, and knows that not every muslim is a jihadi.
Considering the US government (Republicans and Democrats included) has funded, trained, and armed right-wing Sunni Islamists for several decades in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Afghanistan at the very least, perhaps we are all pointing our fingers in the wrong directions here.
The truly terrible and insane American foreign policies of the last 50 years have come back to bite us over and over again. Thankfully the Vietnamese seem to have forgiven the USA. So no trouble on that front.
How does the left sympathize with a religion that oppresses women and gays? Extremists would kill liberals first if given the chance. The Muslim religion is extremely conservative.
