From the article, those states with the lowest crime rates had this in common:

A typical household earned more than the national median household income of $52,250 in six of the 10 states last year.

The poverty rate in all but two of the 10 states was lower than the national rate of 15.8% last year.

Residents in the safest states tended to be more highly educated.

VB is a bit of an anomaly; it's very spread-out and mostly suburban (with some urban, and even a significant amount of rural land). The urban core of Southside Hampton Roads is in neighboring Norfolk, where it's a slightly different story when it comes to the crime rate (see also Portsmouth, on the other side of Norfolk). However, even among the "worst" cities in VA, violent crime has been dropping across the board for a good 6-7 years or so. (I mention violent crime because that's what the OP's article used to rank the states.)

Even with all that data in front of me, I'm still surprised to see VA as the third-lowest violent crime state (per capita). It has some areas that share characteristics with many of the other states in that list (which some here derided as "boring"), but it also has NoVA and two other top-50 (population) MSAs.
I haven't been there, but my father has. I suspect it would be the case.

I am thinking that perhaps NoVA and other areas might not have as much crime as MSAs in other states. Just a theory. I know the other Tidewater cities have hgher crime rates than Va Beach. How does the region compare to other places in other states.

From what I know, Virginia's murder rate is 3.8 murders per 100,000, one of the lowest in the nation.

Richmond is 49.2% Black. Crime index is 416.4. Higher than normal, but Minneapolis, which is 17.7% Black, has a crime index of 536.4. Missouri City, Texas is 41.2% Black, has a crime index of 105.9, well below the national average. Murder rate of zero. Cedar Hill, Texas. 52% Black, crime index of 258.6, which is also below the national average. Murder rate of zero as well.

Probably not for that reason or all states with easy CCW would have a low violent crime rate.

Personally, the occasional arctic blast doesn't bother me all that much. It keeps people from moving here and crowding us.

We have a lot of diversity in Montana, geographically, you can find just about anything here from rain forest to high desert.
Great food too. Best beef in the world

We aren't a completely homogenious society either as we have 7 Indian reservations.

Boring? If you want to think that it's fine with me.

Missoula is an exception to that, they do have most of the drug culture in the state so it would be more familar to many people, but the rest of the state is pretty decent.

If you don't like wild animals in your front yard, long cold winters, routine trips of 10 miles to the grocery store, 50+ miles to shopping, if you like the egalitarian society of white guilt as they sip wine at the concert/ballet/benefit, you won't find a lot of that here.

Suits me just fine.

A good fiddle by a campfire with grilled steaks and a cold beer under a huge open sky, 100 miles from the nearest town with a population of more than 20, now THAT's culture and fulfillment to me.

As to crime, we have wolves and grizzly. Troublemakers get fed to them so no problems

Ford is still one of the most popular and reliable vehicles built in the US, the Ford F150 is/was the best selling vehicle in the country for a few years straight. There isn't a foreign company around that can touch the big 3 when it comes to pickup trucks.

The Dakotas were in the top 10 for years. The Bakken oil boom created a large crime increase in both states.

Diverse as in all types of people. Color, sexual orientation, ethnicity, whatever. If I wanted to live in whiteville, I'd be living in the suburb that I grew up in. As it is, visiting my parents there is good enough for me. I tend to find it stifling which is why I don't live there. I don't need diversity but I welcome it. Believe it or not, I can get bored with the same talking points of my liberal friends, just as I get bored of the same talking point of conservatives.
