Hi Frank

I was in Xian in 1990. I was in the hotel with my girlfriend and suddenly the door opened. Some older man had the keys and walked in with a "soldier". They were doing a "prostitute" check. Fortunately I was tired that night because my girlfriend was a real hottie. But I digress.

Anyway, the "soldier" was armed with a rifle and was giggling. Scared the pants of me because in my opinion, an undisciplined giggling idiot soldier, criminal, pilot is just a dangerous thing to be around.

From what I have seen recently though, the military in China has become very professional and well equipped. They have studied our markets, our military, our science, our industry and our financial systems. I think they are not the same foe we faced in Vietnam.

Default There's NO way..........

No way America would ATTACK China!
Unfortunate it is that we have anything to do with this extemely powerful Communist nation but.......we ARE very deep in debt with China.
We know it and they know it.

They have FAR GREATER numbers of well trained military forces, a huge arsenal of nukes, the backing and blessings of the former Soviet Union and many other nations.......and they CHEAPLY manufacture and import damn near everything WE Americans CONSUME!

NO.......we cannot just attack such a giant Superpower....anymore than they truly wish to attack US! It would be the END of this planet overnight in a nuclear Holocaust.

Besides.......THEY don't want WW 3.........they want to take over America without FORCE and not in a manner where our natural resources would be useless from radiation.

They are willing to sit back and take over this country in a gradual and methodical manner by extending our credit, sinking us deeper in debt WITH THEM........and eventually......BUY US ALL OUT........BUY our LAND, OUR businesses and then, either give us the boot, enslave us or eliminate us on our own soil! The latter one....most likely.

Sounds like a plan.

Skytripper

As time goes by, China has become far less Communist. There is an emerging middle class. There are 13 Ferrari dealerships. There is private home ownership. Things are not perfect, but I do think things are heading far more toward Capitalism.

As for Buying us out, I don't know. Looks like it. But, we thought the Japanese were going to take over in the 80's. But the following generation would no longer work and work for little more than a pat on the back. Likewise, the Chinese labor force will eventually demand better pay and China will no longer be as competitive.

Question Is it time we attacked China?

Look, what I want to know about all this is, exactly who is going to make the sesame chicken at my favorite restaurant if we attack China?

I seem to remember Saddam doing the same thing in 1990 and his claims that "rivers of blood will flow" in the "Mother of All Battles". There is a huge difference between hype and reality.

Economists have recently discovered that China's economy is both much smaller and much more unstable than it was previously thought to be.

Granted, the Chinese are providing a lot of support for the US dollar and have looked into ways to screw with the economies of their rivals, but to call China extremely powerful compared to the US is absurd. China is the paper tiger, not the US.

China has unbelievably modernized its military this past decade. They are going to take Taiwan, it is not if but when. They are watching us spend all our energy and resources playing policemen in the sandbox and are loving it. Anybody ever wonder why our trading partner does not give us a hand in the War on Terror?

China's military buildup is increasingly aimed at projecting power far beyond its shores into the western Pacific to be able to interdict U.S. aircraft carriers and other nations' military forces, according to a Pentagon report released yesterday that outlines continued concerns over China's rising strategic influence in Asia.

Pentagon Finds China Fortifying Its Long-Range Military Arsenal - washingtonpost.com

A top-to-bottom modernization is transforming the Chinese military, raising the stakes for U.S. forces long dominant in the Pacific.

Several programs to improve China's armed forces could soon produce a stronger nuclear deterrent against the United States, soldiers better trained to use high-technology weapons, and more effective cruise and anti-ship missiles for use in the waters around Taiwan, according to foreign specialists and U.S. officials.

China Builds a Smaller, Stronger Military (washingtonpost.com)

In a surprisingly short time, China has accomplished two feats. One, it has focused its energy and wealth on creating an army within an army. It has devoted huge amounts of capital to create a small high-tech army within its old 2.2 million-member rifle and shoe-leather force.
The specialty of this modern force, about 15 percent of the PLA, is to conduct lightning attacks on smaller foes, using an all-out missile attack designed to paralyze, and a modern sea and air attack coordinated by high-tech communications. In other words, this new modern force is designed to attack Taiwan.
Second, China has taken painful but successful steps to create a "defense industrial base," or weapons-building capability. The PLA has improved its factory quality control and its ability to adapt foreign technology. It is bringing an indigenous small-wing F-10 fighter off the production line, and it is moving rapidly toward a "blue water" Navy with ships built in China.

It was more of a general statement than one directed at you. The reaction of so many people to China in here reminds me of the Cold War. The Soviets weren't as effective as what a lot of people thought and the military threat was blown out of proportion. A war with the Soviet Union would have been extremely bloody, even if nuclear weapons were never used, but it would have been closer to the Second World War with a massive push forward followed by them slowly being beaten back than a Communist mainland Europe.

I know that is a bit off topic, but that is what it reminds me of. People here picture China with this huge modern military when China is mostly just replacing most of its 1950s weapon systems with 1970s weapon systems, there are a few decent modern weapons, but the key word is "few". That new tank the Chinese have that they claim can take out an Abrams, well they have less than 100 and they won't be building many more for a while.

That is a good question. You don't hear much about terrorism in China. The NW borders the Stans and is filled with Uiygers who are Muslims.
Funny how the west continues to think China suppresses religion when, in fact, there are lots of religions practiced openly there. At least thats what I saw when I was there. Mosques were located across from Christian churches.

Although I know many people from both Mainland China and Taiwan, I can not understand the need for China to take Taiwan or visa versa. Taiwan is not a particularly nice place. Taiwanese had traditionally had a superior attitude and thought of mainlanders as peasants. There is a lot of bad blood from a historical viewpoint.

The quickest way to lose a war is either by overrating yourself or by underestimating your opponent.
