I don't know if I have ever heard digital radio, other than Sirrius satellite radio, although we apparently do have digital radio here in the US.
Apparently there is a move towards doing away with FM radio in some parts of the world. According to the FCC, digital radio is a superior technology to FM. And it is free, although you do have to have a receiver that is designed to pick it up.
In what will likely be the first of a global transition to digital radio, Norway has announced it will switch off its FM band, becoming the first country to do so. Norway will start turning off FM radio on January 11, 2017, and plans to stop transmission of the last FM signal to the country's northernmost regions by Dec. 13 of that year.
In any case, what do you guys think? How desirable is it for us to do this?

The only downside is old FM radios won't work. There is a limited amount of bandwidth and as wireless communication expands it's getting crowded. Digital allows for much more information in much smaller bandwidth.

I think I should by stock in digital radio receivers.
It'll just force people to spend a gazillion dollars on new receivers.
True but keep in mind they won't be doing this just for the laugh. That bandwidth is very limited making it very valuable. If you want new wireless technology to continue to expand you can't let old technology stand in it's way especially when there is a very viable alternative.
They were very slow to adopt this with the TV's and a lot of missteps. They kept moving the date back, if they are going to do this they better get going. The first step is mandating new radios have digital tuners, they waited too long with the TV's and didn't mandate that until 2007.
Give it ten years after mandating the digital tuners....

Digital radio won't work on regular FM receivers like most of us have.
More planned obsolescence.

TV's a person could get a decoder box to keep their old school sets working tho looking at the price of those old TV's which are dirt cheap, people in 2015 are def buying the digital flatscreens up 1 side and down the other.
IMHO there WILL be a decoder for digital radio for those of us with antique hi-fi's and high dollar stereos like Marantz but the rest of us will just buy the new digi receivers and call it good.
Kinda like 20 years ago a person could buy an AM to FM decoder for their car radio, that thing will come down again but with digi this time for us who drive.
