I am older, and a "thug" to me was a person who was an outlaw, a bad person, who beats up and abuses others, destroys property, shoots people. In other words, a bad guy, criminal, with a bad attitude, out to cause mayhem and commit crimes. When I was younger, "thugs" were primarily related to mafia henchmen, and nazi/commie henchmen, or common steet villains. While these "thugs" still exist to some extent, the majority of individuals nowadays who exhibit "thuggish" behavior are criminal black males - gang members and the like. To me this is not a term that describes a race, but instead a type of malevolent behavior. I don't see this as a "racist" term, but rather an "if the shoe fits............."

Clearly you are denigrating the Thuggee people of India who were notorious for their criminal activities in the 1800 from whence the term entered the Englished language.

It's an overused term...kinda like "hero."

I've realized a long time ago that 90% of the people using the "thug" term have no earthly idea what a thug REALLY is.

If they were called "protestors"...people would find racism in that too

I don't necessarily disagree with the OP, but when was the last time you heard a white person referred to as a thug? It's definitely used as a codeword, sometimes with malicious intent, sometimes not.

I don't think a "thug" is a black male. It's a criminal.

The word is of Sanskrit derivation:
Thuggee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If there is a racist connotation it would have to be towards those who trace ancestry to the Indian subcontinent.

Some segments of America actually embraced the term a loooooooong time ago and it resonates among lots of races but it's heavily rooted in the rap scene.

thug - Bing Images

I mean dang...if I had a dollar for every rap song with "thug" in it or every lame "thug life" tatoo I'd own my own island somewhere.

Heck, it was 2pac that popularized the phrase thug life.
