I've said before that I don't think Illinois pols are any more crooked than pols from any other state, but boy, do they get caught a lot more (seemingly).
We had the distinction of having 2 former Governors in Federal Prison at the same time. One was a Democrat and the other a Republican.
I used to think Illinois had the most corrupt government in the US. I was surprised to learn that that distinction belongs to Louisiana, based on the number of convictions. It made me rethink the whole thing.
Maybe it's more crooks.
Maybe it's more crooks who get caught.
Maybe it's more prosecution.
Maybe it's more convictions.
Maybe the state with the least convictions has
Fewer crooks, or
Smarter crooks, or
Less prosecution, or
Greater failure to achieve conviction.
Only thing certain is that politics tends to attract more than its fair share of crooks.
As a kid growing up in IL, one of my first memories of political stuff was Sec'y of State Paul Powell, who died in his suite at a hotel where I delivered newspapers. They found $800,000 cash in his closet. That was 1970, so in today's dollars it would be about $4.9 million cash.

This is a federal case, so it doesnt really play into what im about to say, but in the overall discussion of must corrupt state, Illinois may be in the spotlight simply because they have stricter laws.
Sorry--what does this have to do with Dennis Hastert? Oh wait, I get it. When Republicans screw up, try to divert with the Clintons and maybe someone will fall for it. Too funny.
He was a school teacher and wrestling coach in Yorkville, Ill until 1981, he paid someone in that city $1.7M over the years for an undisclosed reason. He was a lobbyist since leaving the house and evidently he exceeded the $10K withdrawal red flag threshold many times. Doesn't sound promising.
I'm not one to butt in on ones personal business but for that much money one has to wonder what he was trying to hide.
