I didn't say the immigrant population outnumbered the citizen population, nor did I say that there is no dominant culture in the US (hint: the dominant American culture is a direct progeny of my parents' culture - British. That's why we're all communicating in English right now). But that doesn't mean the US doesn't remain a land of immigrants, because it does. You can dispute that if you want to. I don't know where you live, but most large cities in the US are full of recent immigrants from all over, but now predominantly from the Middle East and Asia.

Never said you did but that is what makes us a nation of Americans today not a land of immigrants. Several generations have gone by and they were all born here so they aren't immigrants but American citizens. They way outnumber and immigrant population here. The fact that we still allow in immigrants does not change that fact. We are no different than any other country today that allows that but for some odd reason we can't shed that label of "land of immigrants" when that simply isn't true anymore. No other countries today are called a land of immigrants. Why is that? Sick of people denying our own heritage and our own identity aka a nation of Americans.

Not true. There are countries called "lands of immigrants." My home country, Canada, is very much a land of immigrants and commonly refers to itself as such. In fact, for some time now, it has accepted far more immigrants (as a % of the overall pop) than does the US. Australia, too, is known as a land of immigrants. Heck, even the UK is now a de facto land of immigrants.

It is when people use those simple differences for ignoble ends that it becomes odious.
So do different breeds of dogs and yet we still call them all dogs.

I have been to Canada and know some Canadian citizens and I have never heard that phrase used there. At any rate I am sure that Canadian citizens way outnumber any immigrant population so they are a nation of Canadians not immigrants. Please post a link that they allow in more immigrants than the USA. I'll wait. Australia has very strict immigration policies also. What country in the world would want to known as a land of immigrants rather than being identified by it's own citizenry? You are denying them their own national identity by doing so.

However, I think it comes down to semantics. How YOU define a "land of immigrants" is, I guess, different from how I define it. Though the US accepts fewer immigrants per capita than do other countries, it still accepts over 1 million legal immigrants per year. In my book, that makes the US very much a "land of immigrants."

No, it doesn't. Do we call other countries the land of immigrants? Of course not. We call them by their nationality. Why should we be any different? When do we get to be ourselves a nation of Americans? Calling a country a land of immigrants denies them their national identities and heritages. It sounds like immigrants own the country not the citizens of it. I am done arguing with you about this. End of discussion.

I wasn't arguing. I was answering your questions.

I'm not necessarily defending high immigration rates, btw, particularly if those rates swiftly and drastically change the culture of a country, or too strongly conflict with its established customs and "values." I understand your perspective, believe me. But, like I said, most Western countries, including the US, are highly dependent on immigration, because birthrates are so low and have been for some time. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.
