You being an African American is NOT correct.

Who gets to make that determination? You?

Hahahahaha! It is not up to you and any American who has African ancestry can very reasonably claim to be an African American. It is not up to you or any self-appointed censor of politically correct speech to make that determination.

In fact, according to the tenants of political correctness, it is up to each person to "self-identify," isn't it?

The term "African American" is a PC term that doesn't make sense a lot of times. Many black Americans originate from places other than Africa. Many blacks have been in the US for several generations, and hold no cultural ties to Africa at all. The term African-American takes a wide and diverse group of people and assumes that they are all the same.

For a PC term, it's pretty racist.

My black buddy at work's family has been in this country 200+ years longer than mine but he's an African-American and I'm just an American. Liberal thinking on display for all to see.

You're white. Be happy with that and stop trying to be cute.

Evolution is what it is, but this isn't about evolution. You're not an African American in any way. Wanna be Asian or some other group...fine. That's between you and them.

But THIS? No. You can lay no claim to it whatsoever.

African-American is not a PC replacement for Black. The terms are not mutually exclusive, but rather one is a subset of the other. In other words, African-Americans are Black, but not all Blacks are African-American.

Black A person with deep melanistic pigmentation of the skin. Primarily used to refer to people with origins in Africa.

Nigerians, Kenyans, Zimbabweans, and African-Americans are all typically Black.

African-American An American of African origin who is descended from the slaves brought to America in the 17th through 19th centuries.

Nigerian-American, Kenyan-American, Zimbabwean-American, etc. A person, typically Black, who has emigrated to America and their descendants.

Obama is part White, part Black, and a Kenyan-American. He is not African-American by most people's reckoning. If he refers to himself as African-American, it is because he is pandering to a huge part of his constituency.
