So a caucasian person born and raised in Africa but immigrated to the US is not an African-American? How can that be.

African-American is fine by me.

Just out of curiosity, why did Afro-American fall out of favor? Why was it deemed no longer acceptable?

I say "Black" as well although I've seen some people from India who ain't "Negro" but had pitch black colored skin and it can get confusing in places like Tempe where there's a big mix of people from everywhere.

It's not like you really end up having to use many terms that often.

I might say, "Ask for Joe. He's the short black guy wearing a red jacket."

But it's not like you sit there everyday going, "Hello Joe my black/African-American friend!"

Hence the confusion over the story "Little Black Sambo".

Africans come in many colors and shades.

It's a regional designation at best.
