As I was driving to work tonight, thinking about the different ways people may react under stress, I recalled the Red Army Faction attack on Alexander Haig when he was NATO supreme command in Europe.
In the briefing (in 1994 more of an academic lesson) I received, I was told of how the blast narrowly missed Haig in the middle car but how the rear guard car took the brunt of the blast. Haig was noted to be there stopped, saying how they had to get to the men in the demolished car.......and Haig's body guards were telling him, "General, we have to get you out of here!".
The point being is that one can't just look at a situation and say because the people aren't reacting how they expect someone to react in that situation that the situation must be something otherwise.
This address is about 25-30 minutes away from me. Wish I had caught this situation on my dashcam! Would have been interesting (but horribly sad) footage for sure.
That's why god in her infinite wisdom invented Tasers. The simple refusal to drop a knife without additional acts that could be reasonable construed as representing an imminent threat, just doesn't rise to the level of extra-judicial application of capital punishment.
Or, the guy could have simply followed instructions to drop the knife, which would have been a lot easier.
Why do we have so many apologists for criminals? This guy had a lengthy criminal record, including assaulting a police officer. He had just got done beating up his wife and child, he we holding a knife (lethal weapon), he wasn't following police commands to drop the knife and get on the ground, etc, etc. etc.
I commend these officers for doing their job and doing it well. I don't feel sorry for Mr. Flores. Not one bit.
Just like I don't feel sorry for Mikey Brown, Freddie Grey or Travon Martin. (and no, it's not because they're minorities. I don't feel sorry for stupid white criminals either).
I watched the video, the guy was standing with hands up posing no threat, the cops for some bizarre reason felt so threatened that killing the man was their only option I used to admire and respect cops but now view them as just heavily armed thugs looking for any excuse to kill, a group to be avoided if possible.
Is there another angle to this video as i'm not seeing a knife.
Also even if he did have a knife in his left hand the cops were a good 10-15ft away both with guns drawn the guy made no aggressive move to incur the use of lethal force and was merely standing there with his hands up.
Suicide by cop? more like assassination by cop.

He could and should have followed the lawful commands of the police ...

Well, I was taught at 10-15 feet, someone can get a knife in you real fast.
