Yes … This is real life … It's not a TV movie in which Marshal Matt Dillon cooly draws his pistol and shoots the knife out of the guy's hand …

These situations are dicey and chaotic and often tragic …
Expecting -- demanding -- that the police must keep us all safe without ever hurting anybody is unrealistic ..

The guy was standing still, arms raised.

If he was running at the cops, they would have had a valid reason to shoot him.

If he started to throw the knife at one of them, that would have been a reason to shoot.

He was doing neither.

Of course, the cops COULD be prescient, kinda like god is supposed to be...knowing what's going to happen before it happens.

They also could be like Superman -- x-ray vision, superhuman strength, impervious to bullets and knives -- but they're mortal human beings …

So … Drop the knife ...

As a school principal I had to confront middle school aged children with knives a couple of times, and once even a student who had a loaded gun. Funny, I retrieved the knives and the guns with no real problem. Or maybe I should have just shot those 12 year olds to death?
You are comparing taking a pocket knife away from a child to disarming an adult on the street?

Its one thing to acknowledge that coverups happen, and to try to root them out, but to say they happen "more often than not"? Well, I've learned that when someone tells you "this is what I believe" followed by a statement with no factual basis, its very similar to his saying "this is what I feel." There is no rational argument with someone who hangs his hat on imaginary hatracks.

I have yet to hear your solution. By any chance does it involve "taking to the streets?" Fine, as long as its non-violent. After the public has been sufficiently stoked, now what?

For what its worth, make that twenty feet. The knife can be in your chest faster than someone can draw a pistol from that distance. This is common knowledge in law enforcement. Not to mention that if your first shot fails to stop, he will be on you stabbing repeatedly.
