For years, Andrew F. Puzder, the CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's fast-food chains, has been telling the world that while the U.S. government makes life needlessly miserable for businesses, California, where it has been headquartered, is exponentially worse.
This week, CKE announced that it is moving its headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee.
...
In June 2013, Puzder told the Wall Street Journal that his chain would not expand in California because the state "is not interested in having businesses grow," noting among many other things that it takes 285 days to get a building permit after signing a lease. This means the chain has to pay rent for over nine months, plus the time needed to build, while not earning any revenues.
The article also details how the company spent $20 million on class action lawsuits because of some ridiculous law about the tasks managers do while on the job.
Well, they had enough and are out of there.
The move comes after CKE successfully refranchised about 92 percent of its 3,664 restaurants in a shift toward a more asset-light business model.
“Being highly franchised has also reduced our office space needs and, thus, made consolidating offices a more viable option,” a company spokeswoman said in a statement. “As such, early next year we will be consolidating our Carpinteria and St. Louis corporate offices in Nashville, which is centrally located and is one of the markets where we have retained company-owned restaurants.”
Andy Puzder, CEO of CKE, has been threatening to move the Carl’s Jr. headquarters from California for years, saying the business environment in the state is unfriendly. He has also hinted of moving to states like Texas and Tennessee because they have no individual income tax.
Senior managemeng will relocate on the corporate dime when offices are consolidated in Tn.
They cannot compete with In / Out Burrger in California.
LOL...two completely different businesses. There's a carls on every corner in commieland. In-n-Out not so much. Carl's is mostly franchisee owned stores, In-n-Out is all company owned stores. Carl's has about 50 menu items, In-n-Out has about 5. I sincerely doubt the reason CKE is moving has anything to do with In-n-Out. Heck, the exec's are probably gonna have In-n-Out withdrawals like everyone else..
There is a steady procession of traffic leaving Kalifornia for places where they can escape the taxes and granola state government.
Thousands of Kalifornians retire to Arizona every year.
Only the ones that can't afford to retire in California. California's wealthy retirees don't leave the state and certainly not to come here to Arizona.
Will the company provide mental health help for people that were just told they have to move from Orange County to Tennessee?
Tennessee is a beautiful state... a lot prettier than Orange County. Great people in Tennessee as well.
