If empathy translates to actions, and not just talk, such as donations to charity and volunteering in the community, the premise of this thread is incorrect.
People who live in deeply religious regions of the country — the solid-red states of the Bible Belt and Utah — give more of their income to charity than those who don't. Of the top 10 most generous states, according to a Chronicle of Philanthropy study based on itemized charitable contributions among people who made at least $50,000, nine voted for Mitt Romney in 2012.
Charitable causes include churches, and Salt Lake City is the nation's most generous city. Its residents donate an average of nine percent of their discretionary income to charity; the Mormon church asks its members for one-tenth of their income as tithing. When you remove religion from the picture and look only at secular charities, the map shifts dramatically towards the Northeast.
Volunteer rates, shown in the second map below, aren't as split along party lines though the most popular sort of volunteering is tied to religious organizations.
Yes, Republicans are very generous when they shift taxes onto the poor. They like to cut property taxes for homeowners, increase property taxes on rental property, increase sales taxes, and cut income taxes.
Which is great if you own your home and are rich but lousy if you own nothing and are poor.
"Yes, Republicans are very generous when they shift taxes onto the poor."
The last time there was a major tax DECREASE it affected ALL TAX PAYERS.
And Oh, it was a REPUB President.
" They like to cut property taxes for homeowners, increase property taxes on rental property, increase sales taxes, and cut income taxes."
More whining about your OWN situation.
Maybe if you had taken a REAL college major instead of one with little chances of finding a REAL job, you wouldn't be in the situation you ARE in.
The choices you MAKE have consequences!
Are you speaking from experience?
Don't you live in Oregon which is run by dems?
Yet, you want to blame the repubs for the taxes that the DEMS in Oregon have control over.
A lot of people who define themselves as empathetic, "nice", liberal really have a deep need for admiration which is pretty selfish, because they need everyone to know about their list of humanitarian acts. Some of those acts really are not so great, more enabling, and they ignore or even have contempt for others in need if they don't fit into a certain stereotype which gets them the most attention.
Where is the compassion for the working class, middle America? If liberals were addressing that they may not have to be dealing with Trump.
If I had to choose a political party representing low empathy it would be libertarians.

I'd say it's the opposite. Libertarians are all about non-aggression and respecting individual rights. They don't want others harassing them and forcing their agenda on them, so they don't support doing that to anyone else. Live and let live is not low empathy, it's essentially the definition of empathy. The golden rule - do unto others as you'd have done to yourself.
One party lies about how much empathy they have, while lining their own pockets. Look at all the empathy on display in Seattle, closing down a food bank that's been helping people for 25 years because the can't spend $53,000 on it but have $1,400,000 to spend on a bike rental program that has already been proven to be a complete flop in Seattle.
Democrats are only generous with other peoples money, Conservatives donate out of their own pocket.
What does a political affiliation have to do with empathy?
Stealing from one group and giving to another is not empathetic, charitable, compassionate, etc. so stop kidding yourself
Yeah, the same Christian Republicans who give so much to charity, are accused of lacking empathy for those in need, if they do not support redistribution thru coercive use of government force.
Apparently, the left thinks empathy only exists when you agree with their views.

That is local government and can vary widely. Have you compared property taxes based on the party that runs each city?
Until they drastically change the tax code, everyone who earns an income should pay federal taxes. No excuses.

In my younger days, many decades ago, I worked part time going door to door soliciting funds for a Polish Community Center. I assumed they would take us to the nicer upscale Republican neighborhoods where the money was, but was surprised to learn the truth.
Maybe it's because they've never experienced the hard life of the working poor, but for whatever reasons, it was always the lower to middle class neighborhoods who had the empathy and open wallets...
