You have that backwards. It's the liberals and progressives who want to pay for benefits and basic services; they understand you don't get something for nothing, which is why they're for raising taxes. It's the other side that keeps demanding tax cuts, having already hobbled infrastructure maintenance, Social Security, unemployment benefits, etc.
The young people of JFK's day rushed to volunteer for their country. The new agency he created, the Peace Corps, was wildly popular.
As far as I can tell, JFK seems to be the last (or one of the last) US Presidents that didn't bring about absolute hate from the other side.

You are a victim of the principle, never speak ill of the dead because at the time politics were extremely polarized. We were just emerging from the McCarthy era, the John Birch Society was the vocal Tea Party of its day and the South was in open revolt against the Federal government. Oh, there were some very ugly political currents at the time.

No they don't. If they really believed that they would pay more... now... voluntarily. Anyone can voluntarily send a check to the US Treasury to pay more taxes right now.
But they don't. Instead they wait for the government to mandate it... THEN they pay.
They SAY they want higher taxes and that this would be good for the economy, etc... but they never ACTUALLY DO IT VOLUNTARILY.
And they still take their deductions every chance they get.
Bill Clinton was mesmerized by JFK as were the vast majority of vanguard baby boomers. How he got to shake hands with JFK at the White House is a testament to Clinton's early political skills.

Hmm...where dos the tax money come from?
Thin air?
We are taxed to the bone and even taxed on what we pay into SS on top of it.

Of course, he likely admired him for his inability to remain faithful in a marriage commitment.
