It's hilarious that anyone talks about maternity leave as relaxing. Great for those who choose not to have children. You still have FMLA available for cancer, heart, taking care of a loved one.

This article sums up my thoughts better than I could.

People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Me-Ternity Leave IS NOT the Same as Maternity Leave

If birth is a medical condition, it's self inflicted. Why should anybody be responsible for that?
So is obesity and yet people who have surgery for that get paid medical leave. Or people who have knee replacement surgery due to sports injuries. Why should anybody be responsible for that?

I'd be OK with Meternity as long as the person taking it has to get up every two hours for 45 minutes and in total gets less than 4 hours sleep a day. That way they can truly experience the joys of maternity leave just like they want.

You don't have to take them.

Pregnancy is no accident and it can be stopped.

Sure, assuming he a highly talented worker. But what about the average worker?

Don't get me wrong I support capitalism, but that does not mean exploitation should be included.

Tell me: What about the average worker?

This is not about handouts. This is about a civilized society.

If you had lived in the old days: Would you have favored the 80 hour week, child labor, and no vacation? Is that correct?

Yes they can, but they must compete with others that are willing to work for lower wages. A great example is construction work. In my neck of the woods all anglo construction workers have been displaced by hispanic workers because they can do the job for a lower wage. These anglo workers have no power to negotiate and they are starving.
