Looks very much like the Citadel is being set up as an example. They will probably go after West Point next, then dress codes for military basic training. I wonder what the Marines would say in that event.
I don't think that the Citadel or the state of SC will back down on this.
I have been told that their motto is Semper Fidelis, and it has been that since 1883.
Their insignia is the spread bald eagle (represents our proud nation), globe (for worldwide service), and fouled anchor (symbolizing our Naval Traditions), also stating that they protect our Nations Land, Sea, and Air, long before anyone else claimed such a thing. They are known as Leathernecks, Devil Dogs (Teufel Hunden), Jarheads, and The Few and The Proud.
I'm NOT so sure this Muslim lady will win. If talking a turban wearing Sikh; maybe yes since their kind have a pretty good rep here in the US, Muslims, especially Arab Sunni's, nope.
Allowing turban wearing is a mistake too, in my opinion and my opinion only.
It opens a can of worms. One rule for all, or no rules at all.
Many Muslims served honorably in our armed forces, they've EARNED their respect. Respect is earned, not demanded.
As the military stands today, it is mostly a secular, apolitical service which makes great effort of accommodating each individual's rights and abilities to believe and practice as they wish, but without patroning any one belief system.
Neither can military ethics properly exist without the concept of ordering.
If this individual does not like structure and order, why the hell choose to join the armed forces? Makes zero sense. Annoying as hell.
If Citadel students aren't allowed to show any individuality, like wearing a cross, why should they allow her to wear a headscarf, something also (like wearing a cross) not mandated by Islam/the Koran - and more of a preference.
The Citadel has a uniform policy in place. If applicants cannot comply, they should not bother applying or enrolling.

Amen.
I liked the quote that compared wearing a hijab to Jewish men wearing payot...that's exactly what it is. Hijabs aren't mandatory; they're optional. So is attending the Citadel.
If we had a mandatory draft for men and women in the US and this individual was drafted, then told she could not wear a hijab...I could see MAYBE grounds for a lawsuit. MAYBE.
But under these circumstances? Blow it out your hijab.
