Get yourself entangled in a government institution and expect the lunacy to ensue at every turn.

and how does a kid on free lunch afford a cell phone?

that article causes more questions than it provides answers.
Whether or not the kid *should* be on the free lunch program is a separate issue altogether.

But as it stands, this kid *is* on the program, and they knew that.

Taxpayers have every right to know the circumstances. You think this kid has a 60-buck cell phone? Dream on.

Good try, but those of us picking up the tab should be asking whether these kids have 200-buck sneakers, computers, play stations, and the like, when a parent supposedly can't afford to feed their kids breakfast and lunch.

We're not all suckers.

Some people have all the luck.
This is costing the state and local taxpayers of VA, not federal taxpayers.

That money should be going to pay for FOOD, NOT for a cell phone plan.

No. Free school meals is a federal program. The kid is on the free school meals (breakfast and lunch) program. BUT has a cell phone.

That money does go to pay for food. But it's not your right to judge every action these people make. Do you knock on the militaries door and demand to know what they are thinking wasting billions on this that and the other? Do you demand to know why they pay their low ranking members so little that members of our military need to rely on benefits to make ends meet?

From your standpoint, why don't we just take the kids away as soon as they have them seeing the poor can't afford them? Or how about we just sterilize anyone who doesn't make enough to afford kids? What in the world are you looking for? This kid, his mother and every other person living in poverty deserve dignity. If you don't give it to them, you can't sit there and scratch your head or point to their race and say "that's why they are delinquent!"

Before making stupid comments, investigate the reduced and free lunch program. Most of the cost comes from the Feds. Local districts pick up some.

The applications are submitted by a parent. The school is to verify 3% of the applicants or 3000 students, whichever is less. They could verify all. The schools sends a letter to 3%. If the parent does not respond, the kid has to pay for breakfast, lunch and snacks. If they can prove 135% of poverty rate, the kid gets free meals.

For every kid on reduced or free lunch the school gets extra income from the Feds and the state. It can amount to a thousand plus per kid on free lunch.

Ninety seven % are unverified. A school in Ca. sent letters out to verify income and got no response. One school district gave a 10$ gift card to all who applied.

With parents not marrying and filing joint income tax and many people working off the books it is easy to keep the moms verifiable income down.My state does not require contractors to have a license and has no income tax, so there is no way anybody can verify income.

It is a huge racket. My congressman has been aware for years, but needs help in controlling.

Or we could just feed all students and stop these stupid games.

Based on food stamps being loaded on to an ebt card that only allows for specific food purchases?
