In the 1930s, a significant majority of Americans strongly supported the New Deal. (Congress, Reagan)

The largest bloc of supporters (and arguably, the strongest supporters) of the New Deal were working class white voters, who benefited tremendously from the economic policies of President Franklin Roosevelt - who was easily the most liberal President in American history, especially when judged in the context of his time.
However, by the late 1960s, many working and middle class white voters were defecting to the Republican Party, and by the 1980s, many more were voting for conservative Republicans like Ronald Reagan and his Congressional allies. Today, a considerable majority of white voters prefer Republicans; President Obama received only 39% of the white vote in 2012, despite winning reelection.
Nowhere could this transformation be seen more clearly than in the South, which since the 1960s, has gone from being the most Democratic region in the country to the most Republican one. What changed? Why are so many white voters - particularly Southern whites - no longer voting for liberal Democrats?

FDR was the right president at the right time. I know conservatives, especially the radio guys go on and on about how FDR's policies prolonged the depression instead of shortening it. I say BULL. The difference was that everything he did with the exception of Social Security was to get people back to work. The Democratic party at THAT time wasn't about freebies and giveaways without the receiver putting forth the work to receive the benefits. Even into the 60's a Democratic President once said, "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what YOU can do for your country".
My mother grew up in the depression about as poor as you can be. She was an FDR Democrat. My grandfather, who had emphysema was given a job driving horses to grade gravel roads. He was a farmer who had NO crops for several years (dustbowl years) and they would have starved without Roosevelt.
It took me many years of showing proof to my mother that the old Democratic Party from then are totally gone. Now it's all about government giving away everything for votes (refer to the current morons running on the Democratic ticket), with the recipients putting forth NOTHING in return. They're willing to bury our country in uneducated, and often criminal, immigrants just to bump up their voting bloc and may the good of the United States be damned.
Hell, in the past years I used to occasionally vote for Democratic candidates back when they used to be allowed to think for themselves. Remember the term "blue dog Democrats"? Nowadays, the entire party has been taken over by the liberal "progressive" nutcases. I don't vote Republican. I vote anti-Democrat.

Maybe because liberal democrats, especially urban liberal democrats, have spent the last decade+ attacking whites every chance they get, and claiming "white privilege" is the cause anytime a minority has any kind of problem and push "white guilt" as if people should be ashamed for their skin color. Also for southerners in particular liberal democrats have been attacking their history and culture incessantly, especially in the last few years. People in the south are proud of their heritage and liberals keep telling them they're racists and KKK members for it.

It's no wonder they're losing white voters.
How so? Are you talking about the confederate flag?

Proud of what heritage? What in particular is "southern heritage?" What separates people born in Arkansas from people born in Illinois? What about their heritage is so different.
What's so special about being born south of some imaginary line? And if they're so special, I guess central and South Americans must be REALLY special....you know....being so far south and all.
You do know that most Republicans back then were FAR more like the Democrat of today...right?
That's insane. Today's DemoRATS are ultra-leftist dirt.
