I'm a middle to the right of the road individual. And I really don't understand why California is prospering. Especially with all the left's imposed taxes and regulations. I just don't get it. Though I must admit I have to give credit where credit is due.
Congratulations California!!!

California surpasses France as world's 6th-largest economy

"Middle to the right", what does that mean? Be specific? Do you support a national health care system like every developed country in the world has, including America's closest allies? Or do you think of that as "evil socialism" (whatever that means).

Do you believe in public funding of elections so anyone can run for office without having to beg the rich and the powerful for money?

Do you support that every worker gets at least 2 weeks of vacation per year (America has the lowest average vacation time of any industrialized country in the world)?

No matter the cost of living in Texas, North Dakota, or Tennessee you still wake up every morning in Texas, North Dakota, or Tennessee.

That's why.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going over to Malibu today. 5-mile hike in the mountains then a beach sunset.

Location and size have much to do with it.

I support National Healthcare and we can pay for it by not subsidizing our allies who have it's National Defense.
Let them foot the bill themselves.Public funding of elections? Not really, I would rather see a cap on campaign spending.
Vacation. I think size of company should determine vacation as well as full-time v.s part time. A 17 yearly kid working 20 hours a week flipping burgers really doesn't rate 2 weeks of vacation.

Obviously, taxes and regulations DON'T necessarily stifle an economy!

California has a lot of natural advantages, including two good-sized sea ports. It has a social culture that encourages experimentation - i.e., trying stuff that hasn't been done before.

It can be argued that California's economy succeeds in spite of the excessive taxes and would be larger still in a more business friendly environment.

Much of this goes back to two things: the largest and most varied agricultural region in the world and massive investment by the DoD. Without the huge amounts of DoD funding sunk into Silicon Valley, the California economy is very different.
(Which, in turn, turned the bank of silicon valley into the venture capital behemoth that it is today, driving further expansion).

An entirely fictional statistic.
California does not have an economy comparable to France.

It may "appear" as if California is prospering if you look only at the size of its economy, but it has the highest poverty rate in the country. And one of the highest unfunded public employee pension obligation liabilities.
