He did, but was not required to as MN has no duty of inform. His mistake was volunteering that information, when the cop had not asked about it. Some people won't even inform after they were asked, and they're probably right if it's not illegal in their state.

As for the girlfriend not being upset, she said in a subsequent interview that she was trying to stay calm because her daughter was there, so don't think that's really relevant to anything.
And she remained somewhat calm because she feared for her life and that of her young child's.
I think this video is not true because according to the police dept he worked for he had been there five years and did not just show up for duty on June 30.
