Well, there are some things to consider not present in this video.

Firstly, population differences. Norway has few criminals in general, few people, and better socialist government. They're public funding is done better, for a lot of different reasons I'm sure. Among them are probably the smaller population, less resistance (they're pretty homogenous), and just more socialism in general. This is an important factor. Our government is a bad socialist government; it's really not that good as being socialist. It does ok; it's not the worst, but it's not the most efficient. We have a lot more people and a lot more prisoners.

Another thing; the video isn't' giving much of an analysis of Norway's prisons. It's true they focus more on rehabilitation, but not all prisons in Norway look like the college dorm room-prisons that were shown in the video. Plenty look exactly like American prisons, they're just run differently.

I'd agree that Norway's justice system is objectively better than ours. Ours is objectively bad. I fail to see how it's not. Comparing the recidivism rate is pretty enlightening. 75% v 20%. Norway's doing better at that; no questions asked. But, the type of crime committed is important. The US has more violent crime than Norway, though it's dropping in the US some and actually rising in Norway due to immigration (not saying being homogenous is better, but it does make things easier).

Norway also has different sentencing guidelines. 20 years is the max sentence. That sentence can be repeated if the criminal in question is not rehabilitated.

I do think we need to work on our rehabilitation. Our recidivism rate is too high and many prisons are being run poorly. As an example, in a private exec meeting among various private prisons, investors were told it was a good idea to invest because of "high recidivism." To me, every single person who is part of the private prison industry has done more harm than most of those they've arrested and should all be tried for their crimes, but that's not how justice works (so I'm told).

Should we copy Norway? No. Should we improve our own and possibly look for examples where things have worked, like Norway, for inspiration? Yes. Obviously.

Size? We are talking about 1 Metro area of one State vs an entire Country. This is where size matters, and so does the Massive Bundle of Red Tape between the States & the Federal Government vs a tiny Country that is a Monarchy.

As for "political will to spend money" ...... Billions & Billions have been spent & spending as we speak EVERY year. Seems like the last figure I read was $17 Trillion since The War on Poverty began under the leadership of the Leftists.

There is No Political Will or expectation on the shakedown plan for Reparations -- and there never will be.
I guess that must be what you mean.

No, but we should adopt Germany's education system and Portugal's stance on drugs.

One way to find out: try it in a couple prisons; see what the results are.

You just got done saying that Dallas was bigger than Norway.

Now you're saying Dallas is just "1 metro area of one state" and Norway is "an entire country."

Make up your mind.

"Billions per year" are not very much for a $18 trillion/year economy with $269 trillion in assets.

Right, in the 52 years since 1964. Which comes out to about $326 billion per year.

By comparison the United States gives back tax breaks each year of $600 billion to the top 20% of taxpayers, has a budget of $580 billion for defense.

I supporrt privitizing prisons. However, private prisons are strictly regulated by the Goverment and health services are run by USPHS. In addition to abolish the death penalty nation wide.

Wow! If they are committing violent crimes at 5 times the rate of the native population why are they inviting them in?

We have so many idiots that walk the line on the fringe of lawlessness, far more than Norway does.
For some groups prison is a culture a rite of passage.

When you watch TV shows like "scared straight" the at risk teens meet with convicts who tell them to change their ways before they end up warehoused in prison. The common trait is that the teens think it is fun to run with the bad kids and get into trouble. It is cool and nowadays widely acceptable.

We see the riots in Milwaukee where "one of their own" paid the price for being a stupid punk. The stores that were looted were liquor stores and electronics. No one ever loots the library.

If you act like a stupid animal then you should be treated like a stupid animal and be put in a cage.

The answer to our prison problem is not to follow utopians like Norway but to somehow keep people from getting into trouble in the first place but until then we need to build more prisons.
Are you willing to pay more tax dollars to imprison more people? I did time, and from my experience- I can tell you that there are many in prison that should not be. Also, there are many more NOT in prison that should be- including police, judges, DA's, and politicians.

The US should model a prison system after the Chinese who have the lowest repeat rate in the world.

Secondly any person who commits a crime against another should be held financially responsible for their actions forefitting all their money and possessions including future earnings until the loss suffered by the victim us fully paid.

Crimes using a firearm should be punishable by death.

The US prison system is a complete failure. We might as well send our convicted felons on a paid vacation. It is time to get tough on criminals.
