There should be no religious school holidays. I don't know about other schools, but the only religious holiday I know about where kids have off is christmas. But that's more because it falls on Winter break.

It was called Christmas vacation on the school calendar when I was a child. By the time my daughter was in school it had been renamed "winter break."

Easter is not a Christian holiday. It is pagan. And the days do not follow scripture. Scripture indicates Jesus was in the tomb three days and nights. Easter claims He died on Friday and rose on Sunday morning. That is only two days and nights. Even so, when I was a child the days off were called Easter vacation and now it's Spring break.

I agree on principle/theory, but it may not be so practical. Historically, there has been a large Jewish population in NYC, especially in the teaching field. With so many Jewish teachers taking off, it did not make sense to keep schools open, as it would not be productive. The Muslim school holidays is a fairly recent addition. It came to be because the NYC Department of Education recognized Christian and Jewish holidays, so it could not discriminate against another religion. NYC Schools have also begun recognizing Chinese New Year as a holiday. This year it falls on a Saturday though, so it is not listed.

When all is said and done, there will still be 180 days in the school year, regardless of the number of holidays in between.

A week at Thanksgiving? Where?

Thanksgiving is a Christian holiday, because it represents the feast and giving of thanks to God for the plentiful harvest (the first "thanksgiving") and that is a matter of historical record.

I don't remember what it said on paper when I went to school, but everybody called it Christmas break regardless.

Are you claiming that ONLY Christians get these days off from school?

Funny , I see NO MENTION of "Christmas", Thanksgiving is NO LONGER considered a "Christian" holiday, or Easter.

Do YOU?

Absolutely correct. They have taken Christ out of those holidays and made them totally secular.

Where I live, it hasn't been called Christmas or Easter break since the late 1980's, except in Catholic schools. And when the public school put on The Sound of Music, Sister Maria became Miss Maria, yet nothing changed when it came to Fiddler on the Roof.

Everyone smiles and says, "Happy Holidays", to which I reply, "Merry Christmas".
