Would be the best thing this country ever did. Just look at these maladjusted, overweight and immature young people protesting about something most have no clue of. One girl (she was probably 5'2/200 lbs) suggested there would be bloodshed to get what they want. First off, who is going to shed their blood? I doubt she could climb a set of stairs without resting. These young people are lost. Their parents taught them nothing.

They do 2 years of military service and get 2 years of college in return.

the department of defense cannot afford the payroll of all college age people for two years AND pay for two years of education...

No mandatory military service but I'd listen to an argument for mandatory public service.

Not sure I'd want these young adults in the military. I know you might say "well it will get them straight" but by the age of 18 it might be too late.

Good luck getting them in shape for basic training. From the couch and McDonalds to the obstacle course?

Or will the physical fitness standards be loosened so we'll have service members wearing 3XL uniforms?

If not, will there be a Pre-Basic training to get them into shape? Or will boot camp be extended for months?

Are you sure you want loaded assault rifles in the hands of EVERY 18 year old in this country? With mental illnesses on the rise?

How will the Barons and Chadwicks of the world get out of enlistment? Their upper class parents won't want Harvard or Princeton delayed so they can mingle with the great unwashed, some who don't even have a high school diploma!

There are no shortage of young Americans who weren't disciplined and have parents that can't even get them to clean their rooms or do their chores. Whipping them into shape in the military when they don't want to be there will probably cause the drill instructors to resign out of frustration.

Many will just fail the ASVAB so they can't join. Unless the DOD will get rid of the test entirely. The way the military is, there are too many 'get out of service' cards if anything like this is to be enforced.

Obviously would need a separate program for civilians and then the real military. But exercise, pre college classes along with more exercise, healthy diet and discipline. Teach them to keep their big mouths shut when adults are talking.

LOL -
Don't you know by law all male citizens can be called up for militia duty from 18 to 45?

Some states have even longer terms.

If the gubmint wants you - off you must go.

We'll have a bunch of young men getting killed in useless wars like Iraq and Vietnam. If they come back home, they can't get a job, end up broke and live on the streets.
