No. Most of today's high school graduates don't have the intellect, stamina or integrity to make it in today's armed forces. The snowflakes you see on today's college campuses demanding their safe spaces would horribly degrade the military. That kind of stupidity will get good men and women killed in the military-best they stay in their sheltered, controlled little worlds where they can't hurt anything.

Many other countries do. And its a VERY cost effective way to train up for civil defense. I do not find your argument persuasive.

These young people are lost. Their parents taught them nothing.
Just the kind of folks we want swelling the ranks of our military!

No thanks. Leave the military to those who are interested in that line of work.

Art. 1, Sec. 8, USCON (1789)
Congress shall have power ... To provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the union, suppress insurrections and repel invasions;

Title 10 USC Sec. 311. Militia: composition and classes
(a) The militia of the United States consists of ALL able-bodied MALES at least 17 years of age and, ... under 45 years of age who are ... CITIZENS of the United States
. . . .

When they need some, they activate "SELECTIVE SERVICE," instead of all the militia.

Keep in mind please that the purpose of the military is to defend the country, fight its wars......and not to correct the ills of society that society itself won't correct.

I had a sailor we were kicking out of the Navy because essentially, she was a thief. She opted for the OTH discharge instead of staying in and trying to fix her life. I was worried about releasing such a person on the public. A retired infantry general who was my mentor set me straight that she was a problem of society that society should have fixed in the first place. It was not the military's mission to fix her.

While there are national advantages to having everyone serve (would people support unnecessary wars if they knew their kin could be in it), it is very, very costly in money, energy, and infrastructure to have people in the service who are not dedicated to the job, who don't want to be there in the first place.

SOCIETY, FIX YOUR OWN PROBLEMS!

EDIT: Make it a competition for a limited number of slots (and benefits) like for Federal Academies and ROTC scholarships. Considering all the things I went through of academics, activities, physical fitness, interviews, writing my representative (Henry B. Gonzales) and senators (Tower & Bentsen), medical exams and whatever else, that sounds like a pretty good way to produce a fine young adult.
