Maybe the theory is that instead of imported goods, you'll buy American-made because the government artificially inflated the price of foreign products, and that will create jobs and boost tax revenue.

Does anyone see a flaw in that reasoning?

Anything else a person wants, they become indentured unto some financial institution or merchandiser or medical facility or practitioner. If it was not for public assistance programs, some could not even utilize the minimum wage as its not enough to afford shelter and food.

The system not does not enslave simply by skin color, if one is a member of "The Poor", they are already "indentured", and this includes some minorities, some poor whites, some dire poor whites and blacks, male and female. This does not even consider the nature of the Elderly. Then if they have over $2K, they have a big issue if they need Medicaid. But by the time they pay their Medicare premium, prescription and co-pay or gap insurance, they are relegated to poor quality food and if there was not Senior Citizen Section 8 for some Senior Complexes, they would be basically homeless. Because many do not receive enough Social Security to meet the demands. Therefore, they are relegated to the basic's of sustaining themselves, with no uplift or means to address "quality of life" concerns.

Go to poor white or minority poor areas and you find Store Names, that you won't find in the Middle and Upper Class Neighborhoods, and they are inundated with "Family Dollar", "Dollar General" and a host of other Dollar Stores and Wal Marts. Just to give them THE ILLUSION that they have purchasing power, the result of such, is they end up "re-buying the same things over and over and over, because it such poor quality for the cheap price, they get something with shiny plastic, or laminated particle board, or plastic with a fake granite look, or some molded plastic fiber cast item, or some cheap tin pots which may have some low grade alloy mixed in. They can rarely afford "quality durable goods".

By the time they consider transportation, they are done!!! "debt" is certain to sustain itself for the long term.
What's wrong with that? Poor people are just lazy bums who don't want to work. They deserve to suffer. Both now and for eternity. It's in the Bible.

wink wink

Placing a 35% tariff on cars and other items will impact consumers, we like inexpensive products.
Trade wars are bad for everyone.

Deregulation nearly destroyed the Airline Industry and many carriers do not exist this very day because of it. And Trickle down give the Wealthy a Tax break has never worked, its just a way of "duping the unaware". Heck, if they pay you a $1 more a day, the consumer purchasing cost will go up $1.25 per day.

Trump can't change that, all he can do is set it up for the Wealthy to Keep more of their money and then push for the government to strip away programs that once helped the indentured and debt ridden (The Poor).

It will be another Reagan Fiasco, where he gave the wealthy Tax breaks, then the Tax went up more than 7 times on the average person as did the Interest Rates. Then the cost of consumer good skyrocketed. He cut funding for Higher Education and demolished Community Colleges, and when the people were battered and worn down, he pumped in Drugs when Congress would not give him money for his Central American War, and we still have a society going from one form of addictions to the next. And Reagan talked that same stuff Trump talks, about stopping drugs. When Reagan talked it, more drugs than every in the history of American came into America. It is not likely that the same will result under Trump.
Heck they did not walk the Drugs across the Border during Reagan's Term, they flew them in Military Air Craft that were part of the CIA's Covert Undertakings. Custom's can't even come close to a CIA plane when the orders is given to stay the heck away.

People should not put all their eggs in a basket (Trump), when the basket has always shown it is full of holes.

He might give a gallant effort, but there is "a whole system that is old and entrenched", controlled by people with MEGA money that simply makes the few $Billion that Trump has, look like lunch money. Trump is becoming fast aware of that. He said himself, that considering the scope of what is within the Mix, his business is peanuts.

The other matter is, Trump would like to have the Powers that a Putin has over Russia, but he can never get that in America. Not only will the system of governance not allow it, the mega wealthy will never allow it. He can play as long as he plays their game and fatten their pockets. But they are not going to allow him to jeopardize the system nor their wealth and power. It's about "baby steps" and sadly, the baby is still in the crawling stage. it will be interesting if he can get the Baby to take baby steps.

What they will think isn't the real issue, it's what they will do. Tariffs go both ways. If our exports are priced out of foreign markets by tRump tariffs, we'll have to cut production and/or prices, which means profits and jobs will not increase.

By the same token, imported materials needed by US producers could become prohibitively expensive.

The small-government-is-better crowd hasn't thought through the mechanic of using a big government stick to cudgel our trading partners, it seems.
