This.

Unless you can address the disparity of labor costs between us and foreign (medical costs included) AND retrain our population for a world of automation, it simply won't work.

Manufacturing is gone... I don't think it is coming back. It is the hard reality that we must face and promises made by any president isn't going to change it. Trump is smart.. he knows this (which is why his companies still manufacture overseas)... but he does/say whatever to win.

It is the Double edged sword of capitalism. Jobs are good for this country but companies don't care about this country... its sole purpose is profits.

Carrier can do whatever it wants and the government can respond however it wants... and yes, that is a threat...

What kind of loser cheers over people losing their jobs? Even if they cut some of the jobs that's still more than Obama and his sycophants have done.

I'm not sure where you stand on the political spectrum, but part of Trump's big promises was to bring jobs back to the U.S. If all you're gonna look at is the bottom line, that will never happen.

This was predicted earlier in the existing Carrier thread. That the company would invest in automation that would ultimately cut workers.

No one is cheering. We're lamenting the fact that Trump promised to do something which he most likely can't do, and is claiming credit for something he didn't do and his supporters believe every word of what he says. In the meantime, he's threatening the first amendment, lining his cabinet with robber barons, and upsetting decades of diplomatic relations with countries who would love to see us on our knees.

Trust me. There is no cheering going on.

Yeah... I think several of us speculated that this would happen.

I hate for anyone to lose a job, but come on... who didn't see this coming a mile away?

This. This is exactly what people are thinking when they speak out against the Trump administration.

The President of Carrier's Union did a fact check on Trump's claims, last week.

He said 300 of the jobs " saved" we're design engineers who were not targeted for the job relocation. While he applauded saving 700 jobs he made clear that Carrier and parent continue to intend to eliminate 1300 jobs.

It's not all about wages.

Carrier is one of many multinational corporations with substantial global competition. Mexico is very attractive manufacturing location because Mexico has more free trade agreements with the rest of the world than any other country. This enables manufacturers to export to the world without incurring tariffs from the importing country. This allows them to position product competitively in the global market place.

Carrier, like many manufacturers, has and will continue to invest in industrial robotics because technology is more productive than humans. It's a global challenge.

Well, it is a sham that they think Trump is for working people. They like Trump for other much more to them important reasons.
