The hyperbole being used in this thread is astonishing.

And of the 40, only 20 are winners.

I do think there are too many bowl games, as I posted previously. I think I read or heard that 20-25% of teams playing in bowl games don't even have winning records. Yay, we lost all season, but we won playing in the Toilet Bowl game!!

It is more than just bowl games. Every team that gets to participate in a bowl ALSO (and this is far more important) get extra practice time in the Spring.

By the VERY DEFINITION if there are teams that DON'T GET A TROPHY, then it IS NOT the same as a participation trophy.

Not rocket science dopo.
Its a participation trophy in the sense that you are giving a team that is possibly ranked 124th in the country a trophy.

I view bowl trophies the same way as I view NCAA tourney banners.

No, there are 40 Bowls, so 40 winners( 2 teams per bowl)

But even 20 would be a lot.

They are indeed participation trophies. Its been that way since the early 1990's when we got the bowl coalition and a national champion game was created.

before that, it was simply a system where great teams got to play an extra game.

Wow, a surprising cliched response from a self described "talk radio junkie".

Internet tough guy gets all tough behind his AM radio, grrrr.

You are right, and thanks for the correction.

I agree that 20 would be a lot. Too many, for my taste. I only watch a small handful. I get the money aspect of it, but enough already.

That's a good question. But we are not quite there. Div I has 128 football teams. Only 40 will win a bowl game and get a trophy.

So yes, 40 out of 128 is getting pretty close to "participation trophies".

Letting teams in with losing records is a big problem for me. a 5-7 team shouldnt be in a bowl game.

Exactly. They get no bragging rights in getting, or even winning, a bowl game with such a terrible record during the regular season.
