It's a gradual thing that occured as the younger generation got more coddled and in need of their safe spaces. Whereas it used to be the liberals wanted completely free speech and the republicans were the ones wanting to censor things, now it's the opposite. The two sides can't help but remain polarized because that's just how politics works.

The left has gotten more radical because they believe their own propaganda and run off emotions, and with Trump in office poking fun at them it has them in a fuming rage. It's all well and good if they are out there attacking and slandering and being aggressive but when a republican does it to them, when republicans typically cave like a bunch of beta males, well they can't handle it and just go nuts.
