How do they afford to live in these areas that working citizens cannot afford? Not only living there but spending money on leisure activities to sustain these businesses, if the illegals are supposed to be so poor?

You touched a good point. All the legal citizens I know are moving from the coast of the LA area to the more affordable inland empire. But most illegals live in the lower cost inner city portions. But you do get your few successful illegals that can afford a nice spot* and all that

They aren't all poor. They work and have jobs and pay taxes. In 2015 the undocumented paid state and local taxes that amounted to over 11 BILLION dollars according to the Institute on Tax and Economic Policy. In CA undocumented workers can own houses and many do. The average house in Orange Country costs $600,000. Some are doing VERY well.

Meanwhile, legal American immigrants (living in Mexico) can't even own land in Mexico.

Then they should be able to live like kings in Mexico.

I used to wonder too .
Many live with many people in one house or apartment . When you have so many people living in one place and they all pitch in it brings the cost down per person .
Los Angeles also has rent control so some are paying way below market rents or their family member is if they lived there for a while.
CA also is a big welfare state and gives plenty of handouts . Illegals take advantage of this too .
Which is exactly what the California FIRE sector does not want. I have always said what this country thinks it needs is
"cheap, affordable housing , that rises in equity and becomes a valuable asset".
The financial press will run alternating sides of this equation in an infinite loop . Housing is too expensive. Housing is in negative equity....
The problem with our economy and the politics it creates is its too dependent on cash flows from rising asset prices. Moreover its fictitious capital based on demand and scarcity , not supply. So of course they want mass immigration. However when will it end? Do we want a billion people here? Do we want 5 billion?
NIMBYs are why there is a housing supply problem issue in California, it has nothing to do with illegal immigrants.
