Because that would mean that Trump picked the wrong guy and that would make him look weak which is why he let the man resign instead of firing him. I bet Trump was also hoping this would disappear from everyone's radar.

He also asked his legal counsel to determine if any laws had been broken. Which there were not. I'd want to know what the legal ramifications were, also, so as to not get dragged into something without knowing the full extent of the problem. "Trust" was broken, and now he's gone.
